NEWS Goldsteins Will Leave Russia On the eve of the release of Anatoly Shcharansky from the Soviet Union, Detroit area ac- tivists in the Soviet Jewry move- ment made telephone contact with long-time refusenik Dr. Isai Goldstein of Tbilisi. Goldstein, his brother Grigory and their families were among the list of 25 persons Senator Ted Kennedy inquired about during his viit to the Soviet Union prior to Shcharansky's release. The Goldsteins this week were granted exit visas by Soviet authorities and they soon will be allowed to emigrate. Dr. Yuri Gurevich in Ann Arbor spoke to Isai Goldstein on Feb. 7. Although overjoyed by the impending release of Shcharansky, Goldstein asked that Western groups and govern- ments redouble their efforts on behalf of hundreds of thousands of - Soviet Jews who want to leave Russia. He suggested that all trade and cultural ties between the West and the Soviet Union be conditional upon the release of Soviet Jews, and that a sliding scale be used linking broader ties with increased immigration. The Goldstein brothers and their families first applied to im- migrate in 1971. Grigory was sen- tenced to a year in a labor camp in 1978 for "parasitism". In 1980, Isai was threatened with forced drafting into the Soviet army reserve. He refused to report, claiming he was a citi- zen of Israel. Last June, the Goldsteins were arrested as part of the "Phantom Orchestra" in Tbilisi, which drew the attention of foreign visitors to human rights abuses. Students at Akiva Hebrew Day School in Southfield have con- ducted a campaign for Isai's son, Avi, who is 12. In October 1983, Avi was beaten by two classmates who called him anti-Semitic names. He suffered a concussion and was bedridden for three weeks. A month later, classmates stripped Avi of his clothes to see his circumcision. The Goldsteins filed charges against the school and its principal, but were told by Soviet authorities that Avi was anti-social for not joining &Com- munist youth organization and had- brought the beatings upon himself. Last fall, Akiva students re- leased balloons with postcards in support of Avi, during the visit to the school of former Prisoner of Conscience Yosef Mendelevich.
