Shcharansky Walks
Bridge Of Freedom

Will Anatoly's release signal
an opening of the gates for
Soviet Jewry?

As Anatoly Shcharansky walked
across the snow-covered Glienicke
Bridge between the two Germanys on
Tuesday at 10:57 a.m. Berlin time, the
man who has become a conscience of
the world was free for the first time in
nine years.
This 38-year-old Russian with a
winning smile and the courage to
match it waved to a crowd of about 100
bystanders on the western side of the
bridge, then roared past a crowd of
journalists in the Mercedes-Benz of
Richard Burt, the U.S. Ambassador to
West Germany.
On the bridge, Shcharansky,
wearing a silver fur hat, had engaged
Burt in animated conversation.
Eyewitnesses reported that
Shcharansky appeared to be in good
physical shape. He had reportedly
