The program of- fers students the opportunity to work in their chosen profession in Israel. In the past, participants have been placed at Hadassah Hospi- tal, Rambam and other health facilities; in the Government Press Office an the Information Department of the World Zionist Organization; in various law practices; and in engineering, architecture, computer and other high-tech firms. Placements are usually in Jerusalem and Haifa and par- ticipants are responsible for their own living accomodations. A working knowledge of Hebrew is required and it is recom- mended that applicants had vis- ited Israel previously. A small stipen is available. The pair are Dr. Oscar Krater of Los Angeles and Hermione H. Spahn of North Miami Beach. They will be presented B'nai B'rith International's 23rd Co. Elliot A. Niles Award. The award is presented annually to the man and woman judged to have "performed the most out- standing personal volunteer service" on behalf of B'nai B'rith. A similar prize, the Sidney G. Kusworm Award, is given to the men's lodge and women's chap- ter having the best overall community service programs. The 1985 winners are the B'nai B'rith Upper Canada Lodge of Toronto and the B'nai B'rith Women Gila Chapter of Richmond, Va. , UJA Drive Sets Record New York =' The United Jewish Appeal has collected $400.8 million for 1986, the largest cash collection of any peacetime year in UJA history, announced UJA National Chairman, Alex Grass. On Dec. 31, 1986, the UJA re- ceived $36.4 million in cash, the largest amount ever received on any Dec. 31 since the establish- ment of the UJA in 1939. In De- cember 1985, $90.2 million was collected, the second highest amoiint ever -received in any December.
