Yakou Smirnoff

Yakov Smirnoff, a Russian-
born Jew who achieved fame in
the U.S. as a comedian, will
give a performance at 8 p.m.
Sunday at the Power Center in
Ann Arbor.
After his arrival in the U.S.
eight years ago, Smirnoff taught
himself English while working
as a busboy and bartender in
New York.
He has since played New
York clubs, has appeared on na-
tional television and in such
films as Brewster's Millions,
Moscow on the Hudson and

Buckaroo Banzai.

Smirnoff began performing
publicly at age 15 in his home
town of Odessa, Russia. He
entertained while serving in the
Russian army, and upon his re-
lease landed a job working on a
cruise ship. While meeting
American passengers, Smirnoff
developed his desire to emigrate.
Two years after filing for emig-
ration, Smirnoff and his parents
were granted permission to
leave.
Tickets are available at Tic-
ketworld, the University of
Michigan Union Ticket Office
and Hudson's. The program is
sponsored by the B'nai B'rith
Hillel Foundation at the U-M.
