THE

was not sure "whether Mr.
Ford is simply a shrewd ex-
poiter of a gullible public in
his humanitarian pretensions,
or whether he suffers from
self-deception." He was
probably "at least as naive as
he is shrewd."
In his "combination of sen-
timentality and shrewdness"
Ford struck Niebuhr as an
apt symbol of America itself,
a nation which "applies the
social intelligence of a coun-
try village to the most com-
plex industrial life the world
has ever known."
This lengthy record of a
nearly forgotten occurrence in
Detroit deserves this exposure
in the interest of truth about
the auto magnate and the
claims about him. Also: it serves
to recall an article on this page
several years ago, quoting a
prominent Detroiter, author
Charles Madison who died about
a year ago, who exposed, in an
article published in a magazine
at his alma mater, the Univer-
sity of Michigan, the falsehoods
about the Ford $5 per day. He
told how he himself, as a youth,
was cheated of the wage prom-
ised.
It should also be noted here
that a native Detroiter, Mar-
shall Shulman, who now heads
the Russian department of
Columbia University, is men-
tioned by Fox. It is in relation to
a UNESCO dispute Shulman
(he was President Harry Tru-
man's speech writer) had with
Secretary of State Dean Ache-
son's associates. Niebuhr had
reported consideration by the
State Department of "plans of
the department for strengthen-
ing the non-Communist world
without impairing the UN.
Acheson himself was neutral
about Niebuhr, but one of his
assistants, Marshall Shulman
was, in Acheson's words, "much
addicted to him."
It is not surprising that any-
one would become "addicted to
Niebuhr." Like Niebuhr's own
generation, and the present that
follws him, all who knew him or
learn about him, especially from
Richard Fox in his Reinhold
Niebuhr continue to be
"addicted" to him. He was a
great man and the Fox biog-
raphy is a very significant book
about him and his era in human
history.

El Al Airport
Counters Moved

Tel Aviv (JTA) — El Al ticket
counters at two British airports
have been relocated, apparently
because other airlines are nerv-
ous about possible terrorist at-
tacks.
In the Dec. 27 assault on El
Al ticket counters at the Rome
and Vienna airports, most of the
19 who died were passengers in
line at adjacent counters.
Israel's national airline is not
happy over the situation and is
expected to cancel its weekly
flights to Manchester.
