Rabbi Nosson Scherman

The annual Rabbi James I.
Gordon lecture will take place
on Feb. 19 at Young Israel of
Oak-Woods at 8 p.m.
The guest lecturer this year
will be Rabbi Nosson Scherman,
the editor of the ArtScroll Book
series on Jewish thought and
history. His topic for the eve-
ning will be "The Holocaust and
Rescue: Cultures in Conflict."
After Rabbi Scherman
attended Yeshiva Torah V'Daas
and Bais Medrash Elyon he
entered the field of Jewish edu-
cation, teaching for eight years
and serving as the principal of
the Karlin-Stolin Yeshiva in
New York for six years.
For the last 26 years he has
been the editor of the children's
publication Olomeinu, which is
circulated to more than 400
Jewish schools throughout the
world. Rabbi Scherman was in-
vited to edit and provide back-
ground material for ArtScroll's
publication of Megillat Esther.
He later was appointed general
editor and has edited more than
110 books.
Rabbi Scherman has person-
ally contributed to the series by
authoring the commentary to
the highly popular ArtScroll
Siddur and his famous over-
views to the books that deal
with Biblical commentary.
This annual lecture is named
in honor of Rabbi James I. Gor-
don who served for more than
22 years as the spiritual leader
of the Young Israel of Oak-
Woods. Last year Rabbi Gordon
and his wife, Malka, made
aliyah.
The public is invited, and
there is no charge. For informa-
tion, call the Oak-Woods office,
398-1177.
