MAGIDA Special to The Jewish News Anatoly Shcharansky r Reports of Soviet Jewish pris- oner Anatoly Shcharansky's immi- nent release from the USSR has triggered a flurry of cautious op- ) timism in the West. Reaction has ranged from an Is- rael Radio report that White House sources had secretly informed Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres that for early freedom. He said that a State Department officer who has been working for six, months for Shcharansky's release was dis- traught at news reports that the Russian would be released. Negotia- tions for an. East-West prisoner swap that would include Shcharansky had been making-tentative progress, said the attorney.. But premature news reports would probably derail the ac- tual exchange. The 38-year-old Shcharansky was sentenced in 1978 to 13 years in prison and labor camp on charges of having collected intelligence for the United States. President Carter de- nied the charges. The general view in the West is that Shcharansky, a mathematician and Computer scien- tist, was jailed because of his activi- ties on behalf of Jewish emigration. BY ALAN HITSKY News Editor , A fire that destroyed the main processing plant of the world's largest supplier of kosher , poultry is not expected to have a major effect jan local supplies of kosher chicken and turkey. - The Jan. 26 fire in Miffiintown, Pa. destroyed the major processing plant and administrative offices of Empire Kosher Foods, which is the major source of kosher poultry in the Detroit area. Empire estimates the damage at $15-$17 million. It has added shifts and doubled production at its plant in , Mount Union, 45 miles away. Super Sunday Gains $818,569 The winners: 5,200 Detroiters who pledged $818,569 to the 1986 Allied Jewish Campaign on Super Sunday. The losers; It would be tough to find any on a day that linked 300 volunteers to thousands of con- tributors on behalf of their fellow Jews around the world. It was a record total on this fifth annual Super Sunday: $268,000 more . than last, year's ,achieveraant. When. volunteer 'tabulator Bernard Kent ran 'up the final tally at 5 p.m., workers on the final shift applauded for themselves, for the con- tributors and for Detroit. But some workers went right, on calling in' hopes of getting that last pledge for the day. Kent was among the 85 Yonng Adult Division members: on duty throughout the day.
