Youth Exchange
Project Launched

An urban-suburban youth ex-
change project has been
launched by the Jewish Com-
munity Council's Urban Affairs
Subcommittee in cooperation
with the Metropolitan Detroit
Youth Foundation (MDYF) and
the Franklin Wright Settle-
ments.
The first mayor project
planned by the Youth Exchange
participants involves the Urban
Hunger Workcamp coordinated
by the Southeastern Michigan
Food Coalition (SEMFCO).
Scheduled for this weekend,
the workcamp will provide the
young people with an opportu-
nity to prepare and distribute
food at a Detroit soup kitchen, a
tour of Greektown, and an over-
night stay at the Central United
Methodist Church. The program
concludes with a lecture and
simulation exercises designed to
teach about the problems of the
urban poor.
Program participants include:
Stacey Gurecki, Beth Kat-
kowsky, Barbara Weiner, Jen-
nifer Weisman, Alicia Erlich,
Michelle Fink, and Rachel
Schey, representing the Fanny
Brice Chapter of B'nai B'rith
Girls, and Danny Kanat and
Noel Beitner from the Martin
Luther King Chapter of AZA.
Urban participants are from the
MCYF's basic skills group.
Roger Winkelman, Council's
urban affairs subcommittee
chairman, provdes supervision
for the program that brings high
school students from Detroit and
the metropolitan area suburbs
together_ to engage in worth
while projects.
Staffing the group's meetings
are Miriam Schey, Council's
community relations associate;
DeLois Robison, of the MDYF
Basic Skills Program; and Ver-
non Oldham of the Franklin
Wright Settlements.

Israel Names
Ambassador
To Spain

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel has
formally named Shmuel Had-
ass, a career diplomat, as its
first Ambassador to Spain. The
announcement followed last
Sunday's Cabinet meeting
where the ministers' were in-
formed that Premier Minister
Felipe Gonzalez of Spain has
already assured Prime Minister
Shimon Peres that his govern-
ment would welcome Hadass'
appointment.
Hadass has been Israel's
representative for the past four
years to the International Civil
Aviation organization (ICAO)
which is headquartered in the
Spanish capital. The Spanish
Cabinet approved the appoint-
ment of Spain's first ambas-
sador to Israel, Pedro Lopez
Aguirrebenoga who is currently
Ambassador to Greece. A
Spaniih government team is ex-
pected in Israel shortly to find
suitable premises for their Em-
bassy and an ambassadorial
residence.
