Kahane Supporters Try
To Force U.S. Debates

New York — The executive
head of the American Jewish
Committee repOrted last week
that on at least two recent occa-
sions, representatives of Rabbi
Meir Kahane have used "ques-
tionable tactics" in trying to get
major American Jewish figures
to engage in debate.
David M. Gordis, AJCommit.
tee executive vice president,
said Hyman Bookbinder, the
agency's Washington represen-
tative, had received a letter
from Madeline Abraham inform.
ing him that Rabbi Kahane has
"agreed to debate you" on the
issue, "Do the Arabs of Israel
have the right to democratically
and peacefully become a major-
ity within the state and thereby
d5 way Es with the Jewish state?"
Tht invitation was sent on
blank tationery on behalf of a
"Public Jewish Affairs commit-
tee."
Bookbinder sent her a note
the following day, saying he had
no intention of debating with
Rabbi Kahane. Subsequently, he
received calls from representa-
tives of the media in Washing-
ton, telling him they had re-
ceived a press release announc-
ing the "debate of the decade"
between Rabbi Kahane and
Bookbinder.
A similar ploy, Dr. Gordis
added, apparently was being
used in the Los Angeles area,
where, the "debate of the cen-

tury" was announced for Jan. 19
between Rabbi Kahane and
Rabbi Harold Schulweis of Bai-
ley Beth Shalom, Encino. Like
Bookbinder, Rabbi Schulweis
vigorously protested the use of
his name, declaring that he too
had no intention of debating
with Rabbi Kahane.
Dr. Gordis recalled that last
August, 12 American Jewish
organizations, representing "the
overwhelming majority of
America's organizationally affil-
iated Jews," had joined in a de-
nunciation of Rabbi Kahane. A
joint statement called his
policies "racism," "de-
magoguery," and "a perversion
of Jewish religious, ethical, and
traditional values and prac-
tices." Since that time, represen-
tatives of Jewish organizations
have consistently refused to de-
bate with Rabbi Kahane despite
continuous efforts to get them to
do so.
"This latest move on his be-
half," Dr. Gordis continued,
"convinces us further that Rabbi
Kahane's appeals to racism and
violence are beyond the pale. He
is not representative of the Is-
ralis nor of American Jewry.
His words and actions are alien
to Judaism, and we continue to
reject them and what they stand
for as affronts to our history,
our tradition 'and beliefs, and
our abiding commitment to
brotherhood and peace."
