• THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS LETTERS FRUIT & GIFT BASKETS OFFICIAL J L AGENCY [OMEGA] For III occasions AUTHORIZED SALES & REPAIRS Kahane's Answer To Anti-Semitism I was reading the editorial page of the Detroit News Jan 15 when I read the most insulting anti-Israel and anti-Jewish let- ter to the editor you could im- agine. The writer blamed the deaths of U.S. Marines in Be- irut, the recent crash of a plane carrying U.S. troops in Gander, etc., on our nation's relationship with Israel. I can recall, "years ago, when Rabbi Meir Kahane first became known for his work in organiz- ing the Jewish Defense League. Mainstream Jewish intellectuals would look at the followers of Rabbi Kahane carrying baseball bats and other weapons, and ask: "Is this any way for nice Jewish boys to behave?" Given the raging contempt for Israel and the Jewish people ex- pressed in the letter to the editor published in the Jan. 15 Detroit News, I believe we should ask ourselves: Should nice Jewish boys, or any nice boys (or girls) have to put up with constant contempt and in- sults directed toward their race or religion? I believe the major difference between Rabbi Kahane and his critics is that the rabbi simple refuses to accept constant anti- Semitic insults as something to be tolerated. I wonder if some of Rabbi Kahane's worst critics have reacted to the steady drumbeat of anti-Israel prop- aganda by internalizing the con- tempt and adopting it as their own feeling toward themselves. If Rabbi Kahane ever visits the Detroit area again, we ought to give him at least as much courtesy as many of the liberals among us would grant represen- tatives of the PLO if they were to come to Southfield to speak their views.
