HAS BIG TIME show busi-
ness entertainment finally come
to the Northwest area? ... It
would certainly seem so with
such names as Barry Manilow,
Neil Diamond, Tina Turner,
Wayne Newton, Roy Orbeson,
Diana Ross, Boy George, Stevie
Wonder and Bobby Darin.
But all are on the same
weekly show ... and I don't
suppose for a moment that any
nitery owner could afford such

They are look-alikes and
sound-alikes ... appearing
Tuesday through Saturday plus

Balooly's Topinka's on W. Seven

important too is the cohesive-
ness with which this lavish
Vegas production is presented
... There is a large stage by the
fireplace ... wonderful sound
system ... five-piece orchestra
... lovely dancing show girls ...
waitresses in tuxedos with red
bow ties ... Huge spotlights on
ceiling beams and big spot from
back of room centering on star
entertainer in steady or shim-
mering light.
Barry Manilow opens the
show with two backup lassie
singers ... then a gal dancer as
he sings about Lola at "The
Copa".
If Manilow's look-alike per-
formance was any indication of
yet to come, we were in for a
real treat ... and for sure it
came.

etc. in a bevy of outstanding
song-and-dance talent.
Stevie Wonder was guided
onto the stage to sing You Are
The Sunshine of My Life among
others of his hits ... and then
guided off ... In all its years,
Topinka's never rocked with
more rhythm than when Roy
Orbeson sang Pretty Woman and
I Got A Woman ... Tina Turner
with high frilled hair, turned
loose her exciting singing and
dancing, backed by two female
songstresses ... and joined dur-
ing her act by two female dan-
cers.
Then it was intermission ...
and the thought came to mind
about Topinka's finally coming
alive ... in a big way ... with a
tremendous show of talent ... I
enjoyed my meal ... Fresh veg-
etables with dip, fresh pickerel
tastily prepared without any
bones ... homemade corn chow-
der and twice-baked potato ...
but eagerly awaited what has to
be considered among the finest
entertainment in town.
On came the spotlight ... and
second half of the show began
with a voice impressionist doing
many more stars.
Then came Wayne Newton ...
Diana Ross in dazzling silver
sequin pant suit, backed by two
female singers ... Boy George
. and Neil Diamond with two
backup feinale songstresses ...
Id his fourth song, Neil's look-
alike and sound-alike is also ac-
companied by a trio of dancing
girls.
The bevy of entertainment is
so good that people are sorry
when it ends ... and the lights
go on ... Fridays and Saturdays
also include Liberace in all his
look-alike and sound-alike glory.
Al Balooly's Topinka's has al-
ways been noted for its very
good service ... and this eve-
ning was no exception , .. our
waitress, Beth Miller, was effi-
cient, graciods and smiling ...
Her trainee for the night,
Cheryl Locklear, will be a good
one ... always smiling, so polite
and willing to help.
Barry Manilow and his To-
pinka's look-alike, Frank Ster-
nett, are both 39 years old ...
and Frank has a farm in Howell
on which Barry would like to
spend relaxing moments ...
Frank has often been mistaken
for the real Manilow but never
tries to pass himself off as the
authentic super star,
Frank was named after his
grandfather, who ran for mayor
in Detroit some years back ...
He is the mold of his late
grandfather ... a fine gentle-
man.
Starline at Topinka's has a
dinner show only, Tuesday
through Thursday, 8 p.m. ...
two shows Friday and Saturday,
dinner show and two-drink-
minimum show, 7:30 p.m. and
10:30 p.m. and Sunday
matinee 2:30 pm. ... There is .a
moderate cover charge ... and
well worth it.
I recently returned from Los
Angeles and Las Vegas ... and
saw some fine entertainment ...
This show made me feel like I
was back in Las Vegas! ... Al
Balooly has tried just about ev-
erything ... This time I think
he's come up with a winner. ,
,
THINGS I'VE NEVER had
before dept
'Steaming" hot
cup of coffee on an airplane.
IT'S AN ART ... cooking
scrambled eggs properly ... Big
trick is taking pan off fire and
continuing to scramble.
CAN'T STAND ... waitres-
ses who call customers "honey"
and "dear" ... It's an immediate
turnoff to me.
I DON'T THINK anyone in
the world, except possibly his
wonderful wife Ann, could write
about the life of Sammy Woolf,
who passed away recently ... I
knew Sammy for many years,
but can only express nine words
... kind, considerate, helpful,
gracious, tender ... a very
beautiful man.
Of course there are thousands
and thousands more... And
whenever you hear the song,
When You're Smiling, remember
that this was also Saminy's phi-
losophy ... "When you're smil-
ing, the whole world'smiles with
you."
Memories will linger long be-
cause of the first and second
generation bar mitzvahs, wed-
dings, etc. at which he emceed
. Sammy Woolfs picture is in
so many many homes ... a fit-
ting tribute to such a very won-
derful person. '
