Teachers Honored
At Temple Israel
Temple Israel will pay tribute
to the 100 members of its reli-
gious and Hebrew school faculty
at 8 p.m. today when the con-
gregation marks its annual
Teachers' Sabbath.
Joseph Poisson, director of
education, will deliver the ser-
mon on the subject, "The Light
of Learning," which also serves
as the theme of a pageant to be
presented by students of the
school.
The service will mark the pre-
sentation of the first annual
Goldie Levine Memorial
Awards, which are to be given
for creative teaching.
Recipients of the Levine
awards will be Ida Nathan, a
second grade teacher, for her
unit on teaching the Holocaust
and Russian Jewry in the pri-
mary grades; and to Cheryl
Kane, whose fifth graders
created the 121ribes in the ceil-
ing tiles of the school wing.
The awards, which each carry
a prize of $250, honor the mem-
ory of Goldie Levine, a charter
member of Temple Israel, a
former member of the religious
school faculty and an active
worker for sisterhood and the
congregation.
The awards are made possible
by the temple's Goldie Levine
Memorial Fund, created by Re-
uben Levine and Ruth and
Louis Cassel in memory of their
wife and mother.
David M. Tisdale, chairman of
the Religious School Committee,
will join in the ceremonies hon-
oring other members of the fa-
culty for service to the school.
To receive awards for longev-
ity are Ivajean Erlich and
Brenda Sage for 25 years of
service; Betty Dobrusin and
Linda Goldenberg for 20 years
of service; and Madelene Adel-
son, Denise Cohen, Stephanie
Dorfman, Robin Herman, Bar-
bara Hyman, Miriam Marton
and Sheri Schiff, all for five
years of service.
Also to be honored will be Be-
rtha Wernher, the temple and
school's head librarian, who this
'year completes 25 years in that
position.
An original service arranged
and directed by Hebrew school
teacher Elena Glasier will be
presented, and there will be par-
ticipation by the Junior Choir,
directed by Elaine Greenberg
and accompanied by Zina
Shaykhet.
