People of all ages look to
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion's member agencies for
help with many needs. And
those agencies represent a
community partership that
begins with support of Feder-
ation's funding source to its
agencies - the annual Allied
Jewish Campaign.
The Campaign helps ensure
the strength of many services,
enabling some agencies, for
example, to help older adults
lead busy, productive lives.
The following profile is the
third in a series showing how
community support of the
Campaign enriches the qual-
ity of life for individuals.

ing with her family, Pauline
Miller loves volunteering her
time to help others. And she
has plenty of opportunity to
do that at Fleischman Resi-
dence, her home of the past
year-and-a-half.
The grandmother of six
speaks sadly of becoming a
widow after 50 years of a
beautiful marriage. Although
she shares a close relation-
ship with her sons and their
families, Mrs. Miller enjoys
the independence and activity
that Fleischman offers. She is
one of 104 senior adults liv-
ing at the West Bloomfield
residence, which is adjacent
to _the Jewish Community
Center. Part of the Jewish
home for Aged, the residence
provides semi-independent
living for the well elderly.
Mrs. Miller is particularly
proud of her role as president
of the Resident Council. In
addition to greeting newcom-
ers to the residence and wish-
ing them luck, she spends
much time in the Nosh Nook,
where she may pour coffee or
just kibbitz with new friends.

Wilderich Freiherr Von Mier-
bach Graf Von Spee, mayor of
)Korschenbroich, in the federal
state of North Rhine-
Westphalia, admitted that he
told the town Council's budget
committee that a few rich Jews
should be slain in order to get
the budget balanced.
Von Mierbach apologized for
his remark but added that talk
about killing rich Jews was
widely used in the past when
discussing financial matters, an

explanation that stunned obser-
vers.
Earlier, Hermann Feiner, a
ranking member of the Chris-
tian Social Union, the CDU's
Bavarian sister party, stated
publicly that Jews who seek re-
parations from German firms
that used them as slave laborers
during World War II created the
impression that "Jews are quick
to show up when money jingles
in German cashboxes."
Feiner, too, apologized both in
the Bundestag and in a formal
statement to the Jewish com-
munity. But the matter resur-
faced when the weekly Der
Spiegel quoted Chancellor Kohl
as saying that Felner's remark
was not anti-Semitic and that it
reflected the attitude of most
Germans. A government
spokesman has denied the Der
Spiegel story. The weekly stood
by its account.
