THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, January 31, 1986 21 • establish religion. The judge found in favor of the eruv, say- ing that it was an accommoda- tion to religious practice. Currently, eruvin exist in To- ronto, Ont.; Baltimore, Md.•, Cherry Hill, N.J.; and North Miami Beach, Fla., among others. Rabbi Goldberg said South- field Mayor Donald Fracassi was "extremely helpful" in the de- velopment process. He helped the eruv builders gain access to city engineers. Added to the Halachic stipula- tions that had to be satisfied, two other conditions had to be met. First, legal access had to be gained to property within the eruv boundaries. This -was achieved by renting for $1 from the City of Southfield all of the property contained within the eruv limits. Secondly, since the eruv is aimed at being a unify- ing force in the community, ac- cording to Rabi Goldberg, an eruv chatzeirot had to be estab- lished. The eruv chatzeirot, a sym- bolic sharing of food, is achieved when a member of the commu- nity obtains a box of matzot for the rest of the community, who become co-owners of the matzot. According to Rabbi Goldberg, "this is considered as if the in- dividual community members have pooled their rights of prop- erty." However, the creation of the eruv does not give one the ex- cuse to participate in activities that are not in the spirit of Shabbat. As Rabbi Goldberg de- scribes in his user's manual, ac- tivities that are still forbidden on Shabbat include: • Putting out the trash for the purpose of collection. • Carrying an umbrella since the opening and closing of an umbrella constitutes shelter making. • Swimming even in an enclosed pool. • Bicycle riding. • Ball playing. • Carrying or dragging large or heavy objects. • Any form of gardening ac- tivity. • Mailing letters. • Picking up a pre-paid item in a store. • Carrying items to be used after Shabbat. • Moving muktza — an object that is forbidden to move on Shabbat or Yom Tov, even in the house, specifically -those items whose purpose is a forbid- den Shabbat activity, such as writing materials, tools, wallets. ' Rabbi Goldberg warns that one should assume that the eruv is down unless it is proven otherwise. To alert the commu- nity, a special eruv, hotline has been set up, 353-ERUV, that gives an updated message stat- ing whether or not the eruv is in effect for the coming Shabbat. Weekly checks on foot and by car of the boundary are made. A break or tear in the eruv would render it unfit. It can be caused by the breaking of a marker or moving a wire, ac- cording to Rabbi Drucker. PENING RYOUR .exr:o.:5 !itrrrM°6 will be ready in just hours.
