George Zeltzer

Detroit speakers will include
Michael Brooks, Dr. Eli Evans,
Dr. Leonard Fein of Moment
magazine, Dr. Zvi Gitelman, Dr.
Jack Gottleib, Dr. Barbara
Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, Dr. John
Ruskay, David Sidorsky, Ira
Silverman, Dr. Mark Slobin and
Shalom Staub.
"Taken together," Zeltzer said,
"the issues presented within the
five symposia and the insights
of the more than 50 artists and
humanists engaged in this dis-
cussion will provide a com-
prehensive. picture of American
Jewish culture."
Zeltzer stressed the coopera-
tive aspects of the program. "We
have been pleased to work so
closely with the federations and
other agencies in the host com-
munities, as well as with the
Council of Jewish Federations.
Their work in helping to develop
and promote the individual
symposia programs will surely
lead to a better understanding
of the nature of Jewish identity
and a stronger Jewish cult4ial
environment throughout the na-.
tion."

In honor of its 25th anniver-
sary of service to the American
Jewish community, the National
Foundation for Jewish Culture
is presenting a special series of
public programs exploring the
theme, "Creativity and Con-
tinuity: Jewish Culture in
America." One of the five
regional programs will be held
in May in Detroit.
Funded in part by a $155,000
grant from the National
Endowment for the Humanities,
"Creativity and Continuity" in-
cludes symposia on topics of
major importance to the under-
standing of the history, de-
velopment and potential direc-
tions of Jewish culture in
America. The first symposium
was held this month in Cleve-
land. Besides Detroit, other host
cities are Atlanta, Houston and
San Francisco.
In announcing the symposia
series, Detroiter George M. Zelt-
zer, chairman of the National
Foundation's 25th Anniversary
Committee, said, "We wanted to
go beyond the celebratory as-
pects which such an occasion
suggests and take stock of the
cultural achievements and prob-
lems of the American Jewish
community. Each of the five
symposia is designed to consider
a different aspect of the condi-
tion of American Jewish culture,
but they all examine the central
question — How can Jewish
identity be developed, nurtured
and transmitted in the Ameri-
can context?"
Each symposium will consist
of five public lectures, dis-
cussions or performances featur-
ing Jewish scholars, humanists
and artists.
Details of the Detroit program
are being completed. Entitled
"Jewish Popular Culture: Media
and Messages," it is being co-
sponsored by the Jewish Welfare
Federation, the Jewish Commu-
nity Center and the Midrasha
College of Jewish Studies.
