(at Maple Rd.) 855-5822 London (JTA) — Prime Minis- ter Margaret Thatcher said last week she hopes to visit Israel this summer after being invited by Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres. She was speaking at a crowd- ed reception given by the Israeli leader at his London hotel dur- ing his five-day official visit to Britain. Thatcher's visit to Israel will be the first to the Jewish State by a British Prime Minister while in office. The two leaders swapped warm compliments before an audience of 800 people which in- cluded other British politicians who only a short time before had been attacking each other bitter- ly in the House of Commons over the Westland Helicopter Company controversy. Thpir informal speeches sug- gest that UK-Israeli friendship has been dramatically revived after a few years of disagree- ment and mutual suspicion. However, it remains to be seen whether Peres won any conces- sions over bilateral differences, such as UK refusal to supply North Sea Oil and the continua- tion of her four-year-old arms embargo. These are believed to have cropped up only briefly during his talks here. In another development, Israeli officials summed up Peres' parallel talks here with US envoy Richard Murphy as two nights of agonizing. Mur- phy has been carrying out a shuttle mission betwegn Peres and King Hussein of Jordan who left London a few hours before the Israeli leader arrived., Officials claimed that 50 per- cent of the obstacles to direct negotiations between Israel and Jordan had now been overcome and that although the outstand- ing obstacles were not easy, they were not insuperable. Claiming that Hussein and Peres shared the same sense of urgency, the Israeli officials said the King knew that he would "have to make a historic deci- sion in a few weeks." The Israelis, recalling last Oc- tober's Achidelauro hijacking and the subsequent abortive PLO contacts with the British Government, argue that Yasir Arafat has dealt- himself out of the peace process. They want Hussein to look for fellow, negotiators among Pale- stinian leaders in the West Bank and Gaza, claiming there is con- siderable support for him in the areas. - In order to provide Hussein with an umbrella for peace talks, Israel has accepted his.proposal for an international forum, while insisting that the Soviet Union would have to renew diplomatic ties with Israel in order to par- ticipate in it. The forum could also not serve as a substitute for direct negotiations. Israel says Britain and other European Economic Community states, should encourage Hus- sein down this road. But the British Foreign Office is •eliev- ed to fear that Hussein would be taking excessive personal and political risks by talking to Israel with the PLO and in de- fiance of Syria and other Arab countries. Sharon Settles Libel Suit Against 'Time' Ariel Sharon Tel Aviv (JTA) — Ariel Sharon, the controversial former Defense Minister, last week reached an out-of-court settle- ment in his libel suit against Time magazine in a Tel Aviv district court. The amount of the settlement was not disclos- ed but according to Israel Radio, it is a very considerable sum, far in excess of the legal expenses incurred by the Likud Minister. Sharon, who is Minister of Commerce and Industry in the Labor-Likud unity coalition government, said on a radio in- terview that he was satisfied with the outcome of his three year legal battle with Time. He said he regarded the settlement "as a victory for truth and freedom of expression for the press." Sharon sued the American weekly for libel in connection with an article published on February 21, 1983. Time alleged that as Israeli Defense Minister during the Lebanon War, Shar- on had privately urgedthe fam- ily of assassinated- Lebanese President-elect Bashir Gemayel to take revenge, leading to the massacre of Palestinian civilians in the Shatila and Sabra refugee camps in Israel-occupied west Beirut in September, 1982, by a Christian Phalangist militia. ■ The article also claimed that a secret addendum — known as Appendix B — to the report of the Kahan Commission which investigated the massacre, held Sharon directly responsible. The Kahan Commission, in its' pub- lished report, held Sharon to have been indirectly responsible and urged then Prime Ministei‘ Menachem Begin to dismiss him. Sharon subsequently resigned as Defense Minister. Sharon.filed a 00 million libel
