Norman Cottler

Norman Cottler was the per-
sonification of Halutziut, having
pioneered in the Jewish Legion

for Palestine during World War
I, as a Labor Zionist during his
65-year residence in Detroit, as
a master merchandiser in the
food industry.
Mr. Cottler died Jan. 20 on
the eve of his 90th birthday.
Popularly known to the
thousands who shopped in the
markets he operated, he also
pioneered in many aspects of the
food industry as the operator of
the Dexter Davison Market.
That was the corner_where his
popularity turned to fame in the
industry. From there he moved
to larger quarters on Wyoming,
then to the present location in
Oak Park, when he retired. The
markets always were known as
"the Dexter Davison," although
in . differing locations, and
became
Dexter-Davison
synonymous with Norman Cot-
tler.
He was a teenager when he
enlisted in the Jewish Legion,
and it was his way of declaring
his loyalty with the Zionist
cause. Then he became a Labor
Zionist activist here, was the
organizer of the Arlazaroff
branch of the Jewish National
Workers Alliance and remained
among its leaders when it was
merged into the larger Labor
Zionist movement.
His roles included activities
for Histadrut and its campaigns,
the Jewish National . Fund, in
the process of which he was
honored with a forest in Israel,
and he supported all Zionist

causes, and educational move-
ments, including Bar-Ilan Uni-

versity.
Born in the Ukraine, Mr. Cot-
tler emigrated to Canada at age
17 and came to the U.S. a year
later. Following service in the
Jewish Legion the British
Army, Mr. Cottler returned to
Detroit, where he married his
wife, Sarah, who died in 1964.
He began his food business
with a horse and cart, later
opening a fruit stand at Dexter
and Davison which became an
enclosed market and an institu-
tion iq the Detroit Jewish com-
munity.
He adopted the menorah as
his trademark. It was the
emblem on his uniform when he
fought with the Jewish Legion.
Mr. Cottler's affiliations also
inclqded the Pinsker Progress-
