ceive the "Tree of Life" Award
at the June 18 testimonial Tree
of Life Dinner at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek, sponsored by the JNF.
The event will mark the 23rd
anniversary of the first Detroit-
sponsored JNF testimonial. Fes-
tivities include dinner and the
dedication of a major project in
Israel in the honorees' names.
Rabbi Syme received his
Bachelor of Arts degree at Wes.'
ley College in Winnipeg; re-
ceived a Master of Arts degree
in education at the University of
Pittsburgh; received rabbinical
ordination and a Doctor of Di-
vinity degree from Hebrew
Union College.
He served as president of the
Family Service Society of Met-
ropolitan Detroit; is a trustee of
the Credit Counseling Centers
Inc. of Michigan; former
president of Central Conference
of American Rabbis of the Ohio
Valley-Great Lakes-Western
Pennsylvania Region; and is on
the boards or cabinets of the fol-
lowing organizations: Anti-
Defamation League, Rabbinical
Advisory Council of the United
Jewish Appeal, National Rab-
binic Cabinet — State of Israel
Bonds, Michigan Chapter of
American Friends of Hebrew
University, Orchestra Hall,
Comprehensive Psychiatric
Services, Jewish NatioRal Fund,

She received her teaching cer-
tificate from Wayne State Uni-
versity.
She serves as chairman of the
sisterhood interfaith programs
and is head of religion and edu-
cation for Temple Israel Sister-
hood.
Mrs. Syme has planned and
executed retreats for sisterhood
for 25 years. Aside from teach-
ing the 12th grade at Temple Is-
rael Religious School, she is a
teacher in the College of Jewish
Studies and lectures for the
temple extensively. Mrs. Syme
is also a member of the board of
directors of Botsford-Zieger Hos-
pital where she serves as vice
chairman.

Jewish schools are invited to
attend the annual special educa-
tion conference sponsored by the
Norman Shulevitz Foundation.
The conference will be held on
Sunday at the United Hebrew
Schools, 21550 W. 12 Mile Road.
The program, which will include
a luncheon, session for teachers
and consultation for parents of
students with special needs, will
begin at 1 p.m.
