erman and Maria Kelbert of
eningrad, USSR.
The twinning ceremony sym-
olically links Sara with Liza,
ho will celebrate her bat
itzvah in absentia since no
ussia child under the age of 16
ay participate in a religious
eremony.
Liza's father, Grigory, a
eningrad activist has re-
eatedly demanded the right to
live in Israel. He is a communi-
ations engineer by profession
but since his refusal, has be-
come religious and now teaches
Hebrew and leads seminars
about Jewish culture. His exit
visa was first rejected in Oc-
tober, 1978.
Liza now lives with her
mother Maria, a physician, and
her stepfather, Leonid Kelbert.
Kelbert was an
internationally-acclaimed film
director in Leningrad when he
applied for an exit visa. He now
directs a Jewish theater group
performing on themes in Jewish
history. The Kelberts have re-
peatedly been denied exit visas.

Dr. Antoinette Tanay has
endowed a scholarship fund at
Bar-Ilan University in memory
of her father, the late Mr. Ab-
raham Usher Hechtkopf, it was
announced by Donald Fox and
Paul Zlotoff, general chairmen.
The fund will be used to pro-
vide scholarship funding in per-
petuity for students in the Bar-
Ilan department of Talmud. Dr.
Tanay's father was known in
New York for both his profes-
sional skills and for his Jewish
scholarship.
In addition to her activity oh
behalf of Bar-Han University
(she serves on its Detroit board),
Dr. Tanay has been involved
with the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, the Anti-Defamation
League, the Simon Wiesenthal
Center and Cong. Baia Chabad
of Farmington Hills.
