the Torah at Sinai — circumci-
sion, mikveh immersion and
most importantly, acceptance of
all the mitzvot. A non-Jew who
sincerely desires to become a
Jew is required to do these same
things.
The Talmud states that the
most important aspect of the
conversion is the acceptance of
all the mitzvot as they are de-
fined in the Talmud and the
Code of Jewish Law. If one
doesn't accept even one mitzvah
the conversion is invalid. This
concept, we believe, as with all
Halachic concepts, is Divinely
revealed law. Therefore Halacha
cannot accept, as legitimate, any
other standard.
This in no way casts doubt on
the legitimacy of any Jew born
of a Jewish mother, nor does it
cast a doubt on the spiritual
validity and accomplishments of
any Jew regardless of which
label he chooses to be identified
by. This basically is the crux of
the "Who Is A Jew" controver-
sey in Israel.
It would be far easier for the
Lubavitch movement to simply
ignore or play down this issue of
"Who Is A Jew," as some other
Orthodox groups have done. But
that would be resigning all
non-Orthodox Jews to eventual
questioning of their Jewish
status (are they really Jewish or
are non-Halachic converts mixed
among them?), and lead to their
inevitable complete delegitimi-
zation. This would be the
greatest tragedy ever to befall
our people.
Lubavitch, precisely because

of its love for all Jews, refuses
to ignore this threat of an ir-
revocable division among Jews,
regardless of the temporary
hardship it may thereby seem to
impose on itself.
The only possible solution to
this critical problem is for all
conversions to be done strictly
according to a single unifying
standard, which is Halacha.
Another expression of the un-
failing love and acceptance of all
Jews by Lubavitch, which I
sensed you disparaged in the ar-
ticle, is that among the tens of
thousands of people who are at-
tracted to Lubavitch, to various
degrees, Lubavitch does not dis-
crinlinate against those who
may have handicaps or prob-
lems, and accepts them without
hesitation because all Jews are
equally God's children, indi-
vidually chosen by God, includ-
ing their handicaps.

Articles Aid
Soviet. Jewry

Thank you very much for the
article (Jan. 10) about the two
Detroit arga people on trial in
Washington, D.C. for protesting
at the Soviet Embassy. It is
through the media that the
crisis for the Jews in the. Soviet
Union can be best told. Too
many of our fellow Jews are un-
aware or ambivalent about our
brethren. Hopefully, with arti-
cles in The Jewish News, their
plight will be exposed.
