The morning had arrived for my return to De- troit from an eventful trip to 'Los Angeles and Las Vegas. I had stayed at the home of Shirley Feldman Prujan and former Detroiter Herman (Turk Prujan) Prujansky ... The eve- ning prior, Turk had used the stereo to play tapes and records of so many fine songs he has written ... many among the 1,000 or more have been pub- lished ... Others remain in his retentive mind ... beautiful and worth so much pleasure. I've known Turk for many years ... but this is probably the first time I had really gotten to recognize his uncanny ability as a songwriter ... Walls of the bedroom in which I slept have song sheets galore of his melodies ... Tapes and records abound everywhere ... Turk's genius has never been capped . and not really discovered ... Here is a man who cannot read a note of music ... but can rat- tle off tunes on any subject within 30 minutes! Turk Prujan is not a well man these days ... and Shirley, one time Walter Winchell's "Girl Friday," isn't a healthy woman either ... But their companion- ship of togetherness is a bless- ing. If the stereo lid hadn't fallen, I would have probably been aroused by their very close friend and neighbor, Jean Gach, as sweet and gracious a person as you'll ever meet ... Jean is the kind of true friend everyone in the world dreams about ... Her kindness is silently un- limited ... Jean's son, Len Koch, is president of Syndicated Services that own many promi- nent television programs ... and daughter Eileen Koch is president of 310 Management Co., personal managers of actors and artists. I had gone to Los Angeles to visit Turk and Shirley ... and to attend the get-together be- tween Los Angeles and Las Vegas tents, Saints & Sinners ... Turk has been named lifetime master of the L.A. chap- ter. Was the first time I've ever taken a busride this long ... Arrangements had been made for the trip with 99 percent former Detroiters-owned Ped- roza Travel Center on Fairfax Ave. ... Cecilia Pedroza, president, was a general as- signment news reporter for KFWB radio station in Los Angeles until she left about year ago ... Cecilia worked for the station 12 years ... Alma Pedroza, former singer wit Xavier Cugat, and her husband Monte Randall, are co-founders ... Cecilia's brother, Carlos, is executive vice president ... sis- ter Inez Pedroza, consumer af- fairs reporter for KABC-TV, Channel 7 in Los Angeles, is vice president, and the only one not born here . .. flamenco dancer sister Adelina Pedroza heads group sales.
