BLUSTEIN President. Rabbinical Commission of the Jewish Community Council of Metropolitan Detroit For 60 years, the Allied Jewish Campaign has been the Detroit Jewish community's lifeline to our people in need of rescue and rehabilitation. Together with our •ellow Jews at home and around the world, we have participated in a partnership that has no equal in the history of any other people. A partnership based on the shared values of our faith and our heritage. A Partnership for Life. What we do in this magnificent community undertaking is more than giving charity. Tzedakah is doing justice. It is saving a life — pidyon shevuyim — as we have seen in the dramatic rescue and absorption of Ethiopian Jews in Israel. It is helping the needy to sustain themselves in remnant communities of Eastern Europe. It is instilling hope where once there was none in our Project Renewal neighborhood of Ramla. It is honbring our parents by ensuring lives of dignity in their old age. And, just as important, it is assuring the continuity of the Jewish People — a task that has assumed special meaning after the Holocaust. We cannot bring back the destroyed communities where Jewish life had thrived for centuries. But we can — through our partnership — seek to recreate the vibrancy of that life. We owe it to those who perished. And we owe it to our children. For them, and for our fellow Jews everywhere, we must dedicate ourselves and our resources. We,the congregational rabbis of Detroit, do hereby reaffirm: It is the obligation and privilege of every congregation to cooperate in every possible way with the Jewish Welfare Federation in its 1986 Allied Jewish Campaign, which will help meet the needs of Jews in Detroit, in Israel and throughout the world. We do further reaffirm that it is the privilege and obligation of every Jewish man and woman to give as generously as possible to the Allied Jewish Campaign, which serves to support the network of agencies here in Detroit for every person to utilize as they are needed. We therefore designate Friday evening, January 31*, and Saturday, February 1, as Campaign- Federation Sabbath, as a reminder that we are united — in our peoplehood and in our support of the 1986 Allied Jewish Campaign. Further, we urge every member of our community to answer the call on Super Sunday — February 2 — on behalf of our fellow Jews. - 11-IK 12ipts1 E CAMPAIGN-FEDERATION SABBATH A January 31 February 1 PARTNERS FOR LIFE 'Temple Israel will observe Campaign/Federation Sabbath this weekend.
