SERVING YOU FOR 7 YEARS IN THE SAME WALNUT LAKE RD. LOCATION

BACK IN THE forties, Lee
Bleifeld, Sally Fields and this
writer had ambitions of starting
an advertising agency . .. We
talked and planned for sevetal
months . .. but nothing .hap-
pened.
During—the better part of
those years since, Lee has been
away from Detroit coming
here occasionally for hurried
visits.
Today, he is a noted painter
and sculptor. .. Lee's one-man
show is set for Jan. 26 at the
Jewish Community Center on
Maple Road ... Exhibited will
be his paintings (mostly oils)
and a fairly new sculptured
medium ... paper cast.
The process of making the
sculpture is roughly the same as
if Lee were going to make one of
bronze ... The original is
created from clay and the molds
are made from that original ...
But instead of pouring hot metal
into the molds, sheets of heavy
handmade paper are layered
and pressed into the mold ...
When the casting has dried it
releases from the mold ... The
heavy east- paper is actually
very light in weight and has its
own particular look and "visual
feel."
CUTE STORY BY her 31-
year-old great-grandson, sent in
by Helen Elkin of Hallandale,
Fla. proves an important point
.. when it's riot printed or
typewritten . Better not to use
the youngster's name ... than
to give !aim one that may look
the same.
IN 1979, Sylvia Stone Ellman
published her daughter, Mau-
reen Cyril Ellman's book, Talk
To Me . .. It was illustrated in
pen and ink by Maureen's
brother, Ronald ... Another
brother, Howard, did the callig-
raphy ... Both are architects.
Talk To Mehas since become a
collector's item ... and is in-
cluded in the Michigan Authors
Children's Book Collection at
Detroit Public Library ... The
book is also included in collec-
tions of school libraries and pub-
lic libraries throughout the
country and the world.
Sylvia says that Maureen
wanted to be a gift to the world
through her writings . .. Her
wish has come true through the
inspiration and pleasure the
book has brought to children
and adults who have read this
heartwarming story of a' friend-
ship between a boy and his dog.
SUSAN DOCKS, Detroiter
working in Los Angeles as a
writer, comedienne and film-
maker, had her chicumentary,

Malin ... on his birthday ...
and three days later to Izzy and
Fran Malin ... on their 48th
anniversary.
C.A.S.E. SOUNDS like it is
something from the police files
. But the name is made up
from last monicker initials of
members.. Sixth anniversary
of the C.A.S.E. Dinner Club was
recently celebrated at new home
of Dr. Martin and Cheryl Apple
. Others in the group include .
MI
— 'Ice and Paula Ceresnie, Rick
and Lisa Sallen and Suzi and
Stuart Epstein... Unexpected
entertainment. for the evening
was arranged by Rick Sallen,
who put on' a fashion show of
yesteryears ... with clothes
from the closet of his father-in-
law, Morrie Bovitz.
FUN-FILLED evening is set
by Artisans ORT ... with food
and special DJ .. . tomorrow
night, 8 p.m., at Ginopolis, 12
Mile and Middlebelt ... $45 per
couple . .. For more info, call
Robin Wine, 661-4448.
LOOKING BACK On Col-
umns of Yesteryears ...
NOV. 15, 1946 ... "Big Oscar
Band, hefty lumber man, told a
group of friends during dinner
.. while talking about what
they wanted to be in life ...
that his parents hoped he would,
become a jockey ... 'You a joc-
key!' gibed one of the fellows. 'A'
jockey , weighs only 97 pounds'
... 'That's right,' agreed Oscar.
That's what I weighed when I
was born.'."
NOV. 22, 1946 ... "The story
goes about a friend (won't tell
his name) who recently opened a
dental office and spent the first
two ,days playing solitaire ...
When a patient finally did come,
he figured the thing to do was
make an impression ... Picking
up the telephone, "our friend
(still won't tell his name) barked
into the receiver, 'I have so
many patients scheduled for
today that I'm afraid I won't be
able to perform that delicate
gum operation until later this
evening.' ... He hung up the re-
ceiver (wouldn't you just love to
know 'Who he is), turned with a
smile, and asked the visitor
what he could do for him ...
The fellow looked at him a little
bewildered-like and then said,
'Oh, nothing, doc. I've just come
to hook up your phone!"
