P.P.
Rec.
Writer-director Ken. Finkle-
man has put too many ingre-
dients into the stew in Head
Officc (rated PG). He has stirred
the pot too fast and cooked it at
too high a heat.
This satire on big business is
overloaded and overdone. It's
hyper.
It's as though Finkleman was
trying to make a feature equiv-
alent of an MTV music video.
There is the same frenetic pac-
ing, quick cutting, and in-
tolerably loud sound track.
All of this is a shame because
there is so much wonderful
potential here. There are some
delightful actors who are nor-
mally a pleasure to watch, like
Judge Reinhold, Eddie Albert,
Jane Seymour and Richard
Masur. There are some very
funny liming' funny ideas.
But everything is laid on with
such a heavy hand that all the
good possibilities are lost. For
instance, that dynamite de-
mitasse, Danny DeVito, is abso-
lutely wasted here. He is not
given one really funny line. He's
over-directed and under-used,
disappearing after the first few
minutes. ,
Actually, the basic story is
one that's been tround since
movies were in their infancy
,
and has been used many times.
It's the one about the sweet, in-
nocent, good guy against the
powerful, big, bad guys. Re-
member Jimmy Stewart un-
masking the sly, evil Edward
Arnold? Or Brian Aherne
against the bad politicians? Or
Katherine Hepburn in Keeper of
the Flame?
The difference is that the
power4mad moguls in those days
merely wanted to take over the
United States. Now,
megalomaniac Eddie Albert
wants toTcontrol the globe." But
while the ambitions.may be big-
ger these days, the talents are
not. In no way do the concept,
writing, directing or acting here
match that of those great old
morality movies.'
Somehow, one of the actors in
a smaller role avoids being mic-
rowaved into a white-hot frenzy
and turns in a fresh, offbeat,
funny performance. He's Don
Novello as Sal, chauffeur and
later helicopter pilot. But most
everyone else is revved to fran-
tic.
I laughed at a lot of the out-
rageous setups but then was
almost Immediately turned off
by how quickly the action got
out of hand. Too bad.
Amsterdam (J1%) — The
Dutch authorities have ordered
unprecedented security meas-
ures to protect American, Israeli
and Jewish buildings and other
establishments throughout the
Netherlands from • possible ter-
rorist attacks.
Similar precautions have been
taken. 'in Norway, Sweden and
Denmark following warnings
from Interpol, the international
police information clearing
house.
In the Netherlands, heavily
armed police were highly visible
near dozens of American and Is-
raeli institutions, embassies,
travel bureaus, airline offices,
schools and even at restaurants
owned or frequented by Jews,
Israelis or. Americans.
The annual conference of the
Netherlands Zionist Organiza-
tions opened Saturday night
under heavy police protection.
Security forces patroled the
building and an armored car
was stationed at the entrance.
In Stockholm, Oslo and
Copenhagen, armed police set
up defensive positions outside
Jewish schools and synagogues.
