girls finishing school where she
was president of every grade
as well as of the student
council. She later received her
undergraduate degree in wri-
ting from Barnard in New
York, completed the Johns
Hopkins University writing
seminar in Baltiinore and was
ordained as a rabbi in
Philadelphia.
"The point is that I've
chosen my Judaism from
strength rather than weak-
ness and I don't need to be
defensive," she says.
"Hers" editor Nancy New-
house says she begged Schnur
to continue writing columns
for the section but Schnur
declined. "Susan is a private
person and she was shocked
at the experience."
Schnur discovered, though,
that the "Hers" column pro-
vides "overwhelming ex-
posure" and she has been
•flooded with book offers. "I
took this year off to write and
I'm considering several pro-
posals," she says. "I think
I'd like to write a book deal-
ing with women's place in re-
ligion."

teaches good taste, that one
should not cohabit unnatural-

"It is as startling as any
paragraph of Andre Breton's,
I think, and as good a cure for
hiccups.
"A student of the Talmud,
then, has two choices (only
one of which the rabbis ever
suggest): Either to approach
the material classically —
that is, intellectually --
sleuthing through to the cor-
tical matter, or, as I did, Zen-
nishly, letting the incongru-
ities shower over me, savor-
ing the chaos, the crazy quilt,
refusing to let daylight in
upon magic."
Raised in a right-wing Con-
servative home, Schnur says
she was blessed with an
amazingly eclectic education,
attending (in suecession):
public schools, a Quaker
school, the little Trenton
Yeshiva, and an Episcopalian
