`Breaking
Tradition?'

As a traditional Conservative
Jewish woman, I find the
Close-Up article "Breaking Tra-
dition?" (Jan. 3) very disturbing.
Judaism is a family-centered
religion. Religious observances,
if not for the family to be
enjoyed together, lose their
meaning.
What do we teach our chil-
dren about worshipping and
celebrating together when
women have a separate minyan
from the men? Where would my
children fit in? Do they go with
mommy? With daddy? With the
other children? What happened
to the promotion of family cohe-
siveness? It certainly seems lost
with the onset of separate
.minyanim.
The participation of women in
the synagogue need not trigger
an entire separatist movement,
because when it does, it only
serves to divide the family. We
enjoy going to shul as a family
— from great-grandparents
down to great-grandchildren.
There is a certain beauty and
joy in preserving this unity.
The participation of women
only serves to "break tradition"
when it breaks apart the family.

Rabbi Wine's
New Coalition

Rabbi Sherwin Wiiie of the
Birmingham Temple has appar-
ently decided "to go public." In a
full-page ad in the Jan. 5. New
York Times captioned "Don't Let
Terrorism Spread into America,"
the humanist rabbi, along with
over 200 co-signers, denounced
the recent attacks against the
offices of the American-Arab
Anti-Discriminatiori Committee,
which — in one instance — re-
sulted in the death of the
group's director in. California.
"We cannot stand by and
watch silently as the terrorist
evils of Northern Ireland, Beirut
and the West Bank begin to
spread into the U.S." the ad
states, inter alia.
A cursory reading of the text
would suggest that the thrust of
the ad was purely humanita-
rian. The wanton acts perpet-
rated against the AADC are
worthy of the strongest condem-
nation and major American
Jewish organizations have in-
deed, as the ad pointedly alludes
to, expressed "concern" about
these dastardly. incidents.
However, certain inferences
cleverly concealed behind the
ad's high-sounding verbiage

To our
readers

raise serious questions about the
motives and impartiality of its
sponsors. The ad states that the
culprits are pUrportedly associ-
ated with. "a fanatical Jewish
fringe group," although the FBI,
which is pursuing the investiga-
tion, has"yet to determine the
identity of the attackers. Since
the AADC has been known to
act as a 'mouthpiece for the
..PLO, the involvment of U.S.
based anti-Plo Arab .extremists
can certainly not be discounted.
The ad's sponsors, with a few
exceptions, represent the most
vociferous critics and an-
tagonists of Israel in the United
States. Interspersed among the
motley group of sponsors are
such notorious Israel-baiters as
Noam Chomsky, Alfred Lilient-
hal, Rabbi Elmer Berger and
the two Detroit congressmen,
John Conyers and George Croc-
kett. The fact that a number of
"peacenik" groups, such as the
New Jewish Agenda, Jewish Al-
ternatives to Zionism and other
well known PLO apologists are
also included, does not enhance
the ad's credibility as a state-
ment of pristine intent.
None of the major American
Jewish organizations are listed
among the sponsors. The ques-
tion is "why?" The answer
presumably is that representa-
tive Jewish leaders and organ-
izations, while expressing revul-
sion and concern about the at-
tacks, had serious — and it
seems — valid reservations
about "humanitarian" objectives
of the ad and its highly selective
assortment of sponsors.
It appears that the publication
of the ad and its appeal for
funds signals the formation of
an Ad Hoc Cdalition Against
Terrorism, of which Rabbi Wine
is a co-chairman. The objectives
of the coalition are not spelled
out. Will it seek to monitor the
work of the investigative agen-
cies of the Federal government
charged with protecting organ-
izations vulnerable to terrorism?
Or will it seek to deter —
through moral persuasion —
such masterminds and "expor-
ters" of terrorism as Yasir
Arafat, Muammar Qaddafi,
Hafez at Assad or Abu Nidal?
At' a time when the Free
World is focusing on interna-
tional terrorism originating in
Libya, Lebanon and Syria, the
Coalition -Against Terrorism in
Ainerica is apparently trying to
redirect 'our country's attention
to domestic law-breaking, which
is the purview of the Justice
Department and the FBI.
