THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday,- January 17, 1986 33 brute m. Weiss One of a Kind Custom Designed Jewelry (113) 353-1424 Veliotes Quits As Egypt Envoy Washington (JTA) -- Reagan Administration officials have confirmed the resignation of United States Ambassador to 'Egypt Nicholas Veliotes, and denied reports that he was forced out in an effort to smooth relations with Egypt following the Achille Lauro hijacking last October. Calling the envoy's perform- ance•in Egypt "top-notch," White House spokesman Larry Speakes said that Veliotes de- cided to end his long career in the Foreign Service because he was offered an attractive posi- tion in the private sector. He will reportedly become president of the New York-based Associa- tion of American Publishers. Veliotes most recently came to public attention last fall, when his angry demands that Egypt prosecute the hijackers of the Italian cruise-ship Achille Lauro was recorded without his knowl- edge and aired on radio and television. The following day it was discoverd that the ter- rorists, who had killed an el- derly American Jewish passenger, _Leon Klinghoffer, had been flown out of the coun- try, and new tensions were created when U.S. jet fighters forced the Egyptian plane that was carrying them to land in Sicily. According to one report, Vel- iotes was forced out after a "sh- outing match" with Secretary of State George Shultz, who had requested that he return to Washington for consultations following the incident. But State Department spokesman Bernard Kalb vigorously denied today that the resignation was any- thing other than a personal de- cision. Veliotes, 57, had served in numerous Middle East-related posts, including that of Assis- tant Secretary of State for Near Eastern and south Asian Affairs from 1981 to 1983, when, he left for Cairo. During his 30-year career with the Foreign Service, he was also Ambassador to Jor- dan 1978. -81 and earlier, 1973- 75, Deputy Chief of Mission in Tel Aviv. Veliotes will reportedly be re- placed by Deputy Assistant of State for African Affairs Frank Wisner. However, the State De- partment would not comment on who would be nominated or when an announcement would be made. Wisner's other Middle East posts have been in Algiers and Tunis. No Travel Ban Washington (JTA) -- The State Department said last week that it was not warning Ameri- cans not to travel to Israel. "No travel advisory for Israel has been issued as a result of the re-• cent: incidents and no such travel advisory is being con- templated," , Department spokesman Bernard Kolb said FBI director William Webster recently urged Americans to be careful , about ,• travelling in the Middle East because of recent rash of terrorist incidents. , 26325 Twelve Mile Rd.
