For The

educate them properly, to fortify
the educational and' cultural
systems in Israel. He mentioned'
a large fund he planned to set
up for the latter, and it is no
wonder-theLeforesthat the Israel
Education Fund was among the
first to honor him. In his
lifetime he had already
pioneered in tasks for the He-
brew University, where he be-
lieved himself "professorially
associated;" Bar-Ilan University,
Teclmion, and as a national U.S.
leader in Akim, the movement
that protects the haridicapped
and retarded.
Paul was a patron of the 'arts,
a lover of everything artistic. He
encouraged artists of all fash-
ions, befriended painters and ar-
tists, and a sculpted bust of
himself by the famous Nathan
Rappaport symbolized that as-
pect of his life. The reproduced
herewith is exemplary of the
pride he took in that aspect of
his personal interests. His home
was a replica of its archeological
treasures of those assembled in
Israel by his friend Moshe
Dayan.
Perhaps the, most applicable
commendation in Paul's com-
munal associations is that he
belonged to Amha. It is a
grammatical corruption of
"Peoplehood," but had been
commonly used for one closely
associated with his people. Paul
was always in the ranks. He
was not like others in leader-
ship, rabbis and lay people, who
had to be on the platform and
listed in the programs. He
attended the functions of con-
cern to him and his People, the
Amha. He had come off a plane
' only a few hours earlier, on one
of his more than 200 trips to Is-
rael, yet he made an appearance
at a Technion assembly, at a
Jewish National Fund gather-
ing, at a Jewish Welfare Feder-
ation and Allied Jewish Cam-
paign fundraising event.
Such was the admired Paul:
--he belonged to Amha and he
treated it as a duty. That's why
he is blessed by his generation .
and will' be remembered by
those who follow and who will
hopefully learn the humanita-
rian lessons he taught.
