port for Israel, especially since
1947, as defined by Polish. This
role, as well as the suWiort for
peace efforts and major social
causes are implicitly well-coVered
in the Polish essay. •
Dr. Polish has an interesting
conclusive commentary to a valu-
able essay in which he touches
upon the current and future chal-
lenges to Reform Judaism, the
problem of intermarriage, and
annotation of Halachah. He
states:
What can be more contradic-
tory than a rabbinate which
has taken an explosively
mitzvah-oriented direction
while the number of rabbi who
perform intermarriages in-
creases? (David Philipfion con-
sidered intermarriage a major
danger for Anierican Jewry.)
Members of the CCAR over-
whelmingly scorn the perfor-
mance of "ecumenical mar-
riages" with Christian clergy
but will not legislate against it.
Another, more constructive
contradiction is the growing_
difference in style, content,
and discipline between the Is-
raeli Reforni rabbinate, rep-
resented organizationally by
MARAM ((Mo'ezet ha-
Rabbanim ha-Mitkaddenim —
the Council of Progressive

OIMIA WIIM M WIM IMM IL

Rabbis), and the Ameiican Re-
form rabbinate. The former is
committed to the full obser-
vance of the Halachah in mat-
ters concerning marriage, di-
vorce, and conversion. The ul-
timate source of contradiction
is the hitherto inviolate princi-
ple of freedom of individual
conscience which, unlike in
any other rabbinate, leaves
rabbis virtually immune to any
discipline except the opinion
of their colleagueti. This exacts
a high collective price, but also
safeguards against collective
repression. It fosters both
freedom and license. No prop-
osals for resolving this di-
lemma have been advanced. If
a request were to be made that
gross violations should be sub-_
ject to sanctions, it would be
defeated.
Yet it should be recognized
that the Reform rabbinate, like
others, finds itself in a time of
such Jewish upheaval that
neat and orderly denoinina-
tional structures are neither
feasible nor desirable. The dis-
locations 'of 'the post-
Holocaust/Shoah explosions
still await rearranging. One of
the dislocations is the imba-
lance between Jeivish religion
