D. Dan Kahn, outgoing Metro Detroit general chairman, has announced. a '1985 total of over $13 million in cash proceeds for Israel's economic development through local sales of various Is- rael Bond securities. "This figure tops our 1984 pro- duction by $2.5 million, and rep- resents the highest sales achieved in the history of our 34-year cam- paign in Metro Detroit," said Kahn. The 1986 advance sales at the Honor Societies Luncheon were the highest ever pledged at a year-end leadership event, he said. Speaking at the luncheon was Dan Propper, joint managing director of the Osem Group, Is- rael's principal manufacturer of pasta, biscuits, crackers, snacks and soups. Osem is a major exporter to the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, Canada and Fr- ance. The company also owns Helena Rubenstein Ltd. and Tamogan, a firm which deals in agricultural chemicals and employs a total of 1,800 people. Its annual sales are $90 million. Propper told the luncheon guests that Israel has broken its inflationary cycle "but our fragile social structure cannot tolerate 10 percent unemployment." He said training youngsters for export in- dustries was a major task and a long-term solution to Israel's economic problems. Osem, he said, is constructing a soup manufacturing plant in the Negev Desert, rather than in Tel Aviv where more workers are av- ailable, "because we believe in the future of the country." He lauded efforts of the Ameri- can Jewish community "to par- ticipate; not just contribute." He cited Detroiters' efforts in Opera- tion Independence to aid Israel's economy: Max Fisher is overall chairman ot Operation Indepen- dence, David Hermelin is chair- ing its tourism committee and Paul Borman chairs the food. committee. "Operation Independence," Propper said, "gives us knowledge of market places around the world:" The luncheon was also the occa- . . sion for award presentations to Kahn and Doreen Hermelin, out- going Women's Division chair- man. Kahn was the recipient of the "Am Israel Chai" Medal, pre- sented by Douglas A. ,Schubot, in- coming general chairman, and Mrs. Hermelin was presented with the 1985 WOmen's Division "Woman of the Year" Award by incoming Women's Division Chairman Barbara Stollman. Commenting on the increased Bond sales, Kahn declared: "For- tunately, our campaign is rep- resentative of the national effort for Bonds and demonstrates a growing unity with Israel and growing confidence, toward Is- rael's brighter economic future. It also reflects a further, growing participation in the Bond cam- paign by many Americans, both Jewish and Christian, in the labor, banking and corporate sec- tors, as well as increased purch- ases of Israel securities for employees benefit plans." Since 1951, State of Israel Bonds has mobilized more than $7.3 billion, channeled directly into the state's development budget to help build every aspect of Israel's economy, including the construction of highways, ports, power stations, the National Water Carrier and, more recently, high-tech industries. All interest and principal payments through the years have been made fully and on time. HORIZON HERITAGE BLDG. 24901 Northwestern Hwy.
