lishing a strong friendship with
Mayor Teddy Kollek. They met
frequently and even wrestled in
tun.
A life member of the Zionist
Organization of America, he had
the privilege, about four weeks
before his passing, to learn that
he had been selected to receive
this year's coveted Brandeis
Award, previously awarded to
only two other Detroiters, Max
Fisher and this reporter. When
this reporter informed him of
the national and local Zionist
decisions to present him with
the planned award at a national
gathering perhaps to be hosted .
here, he said: "I am deeply
moved. I accept. I am a life ZOA
member and proud of it."
Here is an abbreviated record
of Paul Zuckerman's, local and
U.S. associations:
President of AKIM, USA; Is-
rael board of governors, Ben-
Gurion University; board of
American Friends of Ben-Gurion
University; board of American
Friends, Hebrew University-
Michigan Chapter; board of
trustees, United Jewish Appeal;
chairman, world fund-raising
committee of Jewish Agency; di-
rector, United Foundation of De-
troit; director, Detroit Round
Table, National Conference of
Christians and Jews; executive
committee, American Israel
Public Affairs Committee; direc-
tor and treasurer, United Israel
Appeal; director, American
Jewish Joint Distribution Com-
mittee; board of Boy's Town,
Jerusalem; director, Michigan
Society for Mentally Diseased;
life director, Detroit Institute of
Arts; executive committee and

troit; vice president, National
ORT Federation; executive
committee, Jewish Welfare Fed-
eration of Detroit.
Born in Turkey, May 31,
1912, Zuckerman came to this
country as a child of 2. His
father, Joseph Zuckerman, was
prominent in the Jewish and
general communities as a
pioneer in the travel business.
In the years when Jewish
families were split temporarily
by elders emigrating from
Europetg‘ the U.S., he was fam-
ous he ' for the sale of
Thifskarten" — boat tickets.
Zuckerman was a genius in
fund raising. When Israel was
threatened prior to the Six-Day
War of 1967, he charted a plane
and traveled to hundreds of
communities. He then set the
record of mobilizing 10 Ameri-
can Jews with gifts of a million
dollars each.
In his speeches he was often a
bit off color, something that
often added,to his fame in Is-
rael. In all instances he emerged
as the "Diamond in the Rough,"
the big-hearted Paul with an in-
ternationalized presence where
compassion was needed.
Mr. Zuckerman leaves his
wife, Helen; a son, Norbert; a
daughter, Mrs. Thomas (Linda)
Klein; two brothers, Victor Zuc-
kerman and Emanuel Leonard;
and three grandchildren. Ser-
vices, 12, noon today at Ira
Kaufman Chapel.
