At Coats Unlimited...

women were given a wig and a
$100 bill in exchange for a
promise to wear the wig and to
marry an unnamed yeshiva stu-
dent in Brooklyn.
Here is another personal re-
collection of a more recent time.
The scene: a Bayside, N.Y.
synagogue, Yom Kippur eve. A
young college boy, in white shirt
and tie, enters the house of
prayer for the Kol Nidre service.
The ushers: "No ticket?" The
president: "No ticket, no busi-
ness coming here!" Nice' college
boy, very embarrassed, is es-
corted out. I never saw the boy
again. He may have paired up
with a shikse, or maybe not. But
he never retarded to the
synagogue.
I offer these examples of
"soul-saving" to Dr. Jacobs as
food for thought in his plan to
hire a corps of "circuit rabbis" to
reach college students in order
to "keep them within our fold."
Terrific, Dr. Jacobs, but please,
don't give the students a guilt
complex as perpetritors of the
"Second Holocaust!" Don't use
scare tactics with images of "SS
troopers, wielding truncheons
and mowing us down with sub-
machine guns." Is this a college
campus in America in 1985?
Abusing the Holocaust in
every crisis, real or imagined, is
tantamount to yelling "fire" in a
crowded movie theater. If, God
forbid, the real danger arises, no
one will pay attention.
