Whenever that balance is cliff,
turbed, Jewish life is dis-
turbed. When Reform arbitrar-
ily excluded ethnicity, and
when political Zionism
excluded religion (except in a
political context), a serious
Jewish schism erupted. Tak-
ing into account the great re-'
' ligious contributions Reform
has made in Israel — the
Jerusalem School of HUC-JIR,
the Reform Kibbutz Yahel, and
MARMAM — the dominant
perception is still that of a
movement where ethnicity ri-.
vats religion. Reform is now
challenged to exert its
prophetic-religious influence
in an increasingly politicized
Jewish world. The synthesis of
both is difficult to attain, but
this must be a primary task of
the Reform rabbinate.

Under the guidance of Dr. Jacob
Marcus and Abraham Peck, there
is a new enrichment in Jewish ar-
chival publishing. Two new pro-
ducts supplement The American
Rabbinate. They are:
Sir Moses Montefiore: Ameri-
can Jewry's Ideal, a study by Dr.

MoshoDiiVii; and On the Edge of
Greatness: A Portrait ofAmeri can
Jewry in the Early National
Period by Ira Rosenwaike. (Ktav
distributes the latter volume.)
There is immense fascination in
- the study of the life and numerous
public service of Sir Moses Mon-
tefiore. A notable study is made of
his many achievements.
The Montefiore record of con-
tributions towards aiding Jews in
distress, his role in the Damascus
Blood Libel deliberations, his de-
votion toward settling fellow Jews
in Palestine, are outlined impres-
sively.
Dr. Davis emphasizes that
while Sir Moses Montefiore had
never visited the United States he
nevertheless became a iymbol of
generosity and devotion to major
Jewish needs everywhere. He
points out that his study showed
that at least 98 American Jewish
institutions carry the Montefiore
name. The listings are in 51 cities
' in 27 states. They include' 17 - aka-.
• agogues, 11 Miltural and literary
associations, five Hebrew free
schools, 12 benevolent societies
and lodges, nine social clubs, '12
aid organizations, three old age
homes, two hospitals, four burial
associations and cemeteries and
two agricultural aid institutions.
