cated in the United States.
Advising prior to Tegistra-
tion was available and great-
ly encouraged. Each semes-
ter, we were required to par-
ticipate in at least five cours-
es. Usually Israeli univer-
sities operate six days a
week; however, the Tel Aviv
University overseas program
' scheduled classes for' a five
day week to allow more free
time for foreign students.
General studies subjects,
such as accounting, psycho-
logy, biology and English
literature, were offered. Nev-
ertheless, Israel and Jewish
studies were the primary em-
phasis. Unique courses
ranged from "Holocaust in
Film" to "History of U.S. In-
volvement in the Middle
East," from "Wisdom Litera-
ture of the Bible" to "Social
Analysis of the Disadvan-
taged in Israeli Society."
Special options could be chos-
en, including field 'experience
in an underprivileged neigh-
borhood or an internship at
the Shiloach Center for Mid-
dle East Research.
Perhaps more importantly,
throughout the semester our
"dassropm" included the en-
tire country. By our numer-
ous trips, we gained further
insight into a region, a state,
and a people.
In the Timnah Valley, we
saw ancient chariot drawings
on cave walls, while in a Ne-
gev research center we viewed
modern attempts to seed
clouds in order to change the
ever-dry weather of southern
Israel. We visited controver-
sial development towns and
listened to complex and often
disturbing speeches about
the future. All these univer-
sity sponsored tours, usually
conducted on weekends and
vacations, were an integral
part of the program.
We were also encouraged
to mingle with Israeli stu-
dents by participating in
seminars, joining folk danc-
ing groups, and chatting at
the campus cafes. Many of us
regularly visited the Tel Aviv
University sports center,
which offered tennis and bas-
, ketball courts, a soccer sta-
dium, track, and large swim.-
ming pool. -

taged child, viewing the agricultural techniques of a 1db-
butz, learning scuba diving at an internationally
renowned Center for Marine Studies, and interning for
Middle East research studies. Classes for overseas
students are taught in English, and credit may be
transferred to home universities. Scholarship help is
