The Dombeys were among a
nucleus of Oak Park and Hun-

founded Oak-Woods in 1952:

Jewish congregation in Detroit's
northwest suburbs. They have
been active members of the con-

Dombey was born in Detroit,
the son of Maurice Dombey, who
was widely known in the Detroit
area as an entertainer. In live
performances as "Moishe ben
Moishe" and on Weinberg's Yid-
dish Radio Hour in the 1940s as
"Mr. Tchizik," the elder Dombey
entertained with interpretive
readings from Sholem Aleichem.
The younger Dombey earned a
B.A. degree in education at
Wayne State University, at-
tended Brown University and
Amherst College while in the
U.S. Army (1943-1946), and
earned an M.A. degree in educa-

While in New York, he met
and married Fayga Herman in
1948.
The Dombevs resided in New

moved to Detroit. Dombey, who
had taught in the DetroitPublic
Schools and in the New York
Public Schools, again took up a
teaching position. In Detroit, he
worked as a math teacher at

He later served as administra-
tive assistant of the Detroit
Public Schools' job upgrading
program, which assisted high
school dropouts in finding
employment. He then served as
administrative assistant in the
attendance department until his
retirement in 1984.
A noted professional photo-
