Merger Pushed

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Herut
Party leaders resolved last week
to "speed up" their consideration
of a full merger with their
partners in the Likud, the Lib-
eral Party.
,,The decision follows angry
Liberal threats to cut loose from
the Likud unless a full-fledged
merger is agreed upon soon.
Some Herut figures have been
prepared to face down the 'Lib-
erals in this brinkmanship, but
others fear a real rift develop-
ing.
The Herut leaders met in the
office of Vice Premier Yitzhak
Shamir and delegated Ministers
Moshe Arens and Haim Corfu to
negotiate with the Liberals.
The Herut team is to consider
an agreement made with the
Liberals earlier this year as "the
starting point" for these new
talks.
The agreement, concluded by
David Levy for Herut and
Moshe Nissim for the Liberals,
would give the Liberals 36 per-
cent representation in all the
United Party's forums: Cabinet,
Knesset List, Jewish Agency,
Histadrut, etc. Herut members
have balked at this', believing
the proportion to be far in ex-
cess of the liberals real electoral
strength.
The Liberals for their part
have warned recently that if
that agreement is not honored
they may renounce their 20-
year-old Likud electoral alliance
with Herut. The implication —
which has unnerved at least
some in Herut — is that the
Liberals, or some of them, might
consider striking a deal with
Labor.

Disparity

Jerusalem — Israel's indust-
rial workers are among the low-
est paid in the world but pro-
duction costs in Israel are the
second highest, according to
comparative figures released by
the Israel Productivity -Institute
this week. Yosef Doriel, head of
the Institute, said the figures
"did not reflect efficiency" in in-
dustry.
An Israeli industrial worker
earns $4.39 per hour. The aver-
age hourly wage of American
industrial workers is $12.89; in
Japan it is $6.42 and in Britain
$5.95. Doriel pointed out that
there is a link between the fall
in producivity in Israel, the rise
in production costs and the wage
disparity between industrial
workers here and abroad.

Judaica Given

New York (JTA) — Eight rare
Judaica items — including the
first translation of the Bible
completed in America by a Jew,
and the text of a controversial
sermon on slavery given in 1861 •
-- have been donated to Yeshiva
University libraries by an
anonymous donor. University of-
ficials said the items were
purchased at auctions in both
the United States and Israel.
