Traditionalist Millie Rosenbaum
isn't "crazy about it" but accepts
that her, daughter at, Hillel Day
School , is given aliyah along
with the boys. don't think it
will be detrimental to her," she
sari. Amittai Rudaysky,
tant principal at Hillel, states
that "across the board; there is
no separation of boys and girls'
roles, at Hillel. There is an op-
portuniy for any girl to read the
Torah (while), . we don't. force
anyone to go up there to lead a
service."
The religious opportunities .
•are provided' to all because
Hillel sees itself as a school
serving the entire Jewish com-
munity, says Rudaysky. Its stu-'
dents of kindergarten age to
grade 9, come from a variety of
Jewish backgrounds. Hillel
families belong to Temple Beth
El as well as Young Israel.
When it is time to prepare
Hillel children for their Bar or
Bat Mitzvah, Canter Louis
Klein (of Cong. B'nai Moshe), in
accordance with parents' wishes,
works - with each child's
synagogue in terms of what it
will permit him or her to do at
the ceremony.
"One of Hillel's greatest ad-
vantages;" says Rudaysky, "is
that we have children from all
the religious orientations and
learn to respect their differ-
ences."
Batia Eizikovic, the United
Hebrew Schools principal, says
her students also come from
congregations with different
orientations. She says girls' and
boys get the same training at
um and then "we leave it up to
the parents to decide how much
to use" when it's time for their
Bat or Bar Mitzvah.
Joan Provizer of Shaarey
Zedek says the girls' early ex ,
periences of religious equality
with the boys will continue, to
make a difference in' the Con-
servative movement.: "I think a
lot of change has come about be-
cause of the children. 'The USY
(United Synagogue Youth) kids
come back from conferences
with different ideas from in-
teracting with kids from other
congregations," she sayi.
Conservative congregations
with young people, whose mem-
bership predominates in the
25-39-year-old category, have
been found to permit women to
participate more fully than do
some congregationa with older
members. So one conclusion
might be that it's only ,a matter
of time before liberal women get
the full equality they seek.
Rabbi Schnipper of more tradi-
tional Cong. 4eth Abraham
Hillel Moses says his congreg-
, ants tend to be in , their early.
• 50s. It's one reason he treads
lightly when it comes to making
changes ,— of any kind. "When
people, who haVe been congrega-
tion members for a' long time
are confronted by change, they
may -feel like an outcast," he
explains.
But Rabbi Nelson of -Cong._
Beth Shalom, who may have en-
countered less than the ,usual .
