says in attending previous Sim-
chat Torah services,'her feeling
was "women were there primar-
ily to prepare kiddush for the
men. Any man can get aliyah if
he wants it (on Simchat Torah).
Then after the aliyah, they
(men) go back to the table
where the women have prepared
gefilte fish, wine and creamed
herring.
"You sit while the men are
running around and enjoying
themselves and having a good
time. They are thrilled." She
clearly was not.
Some women don't mind.
Libby Weingarden, a member of
Cong. Shaarey Zedek who was
raised as an Orthodox Jew, take
pleasure in the men's enjoy-
ment, and encourages their
traditional status in the
synagogue. "I have a strong feel. -
ing that we've emasculated the
men enough," Weingarden says.
"The synagogue' was one place
where they could shine. We're
taking away privileges from the
men. There's.only X number of
honors men can have. Now they
must compete with women."
Charlotte Dubin, in her arti-
cle "A Woman's Viewpoint:
Torah Should Belong Equally to
All" in The Jewish News 12
years ago, wrote that Jewish
men should not feel threatened
by 'women in religious life. "To
those who say this new de-
velopment smacks of Reform
and thus is 'endangering the
very foundation' of the Conser-
vative movement, I say: Surely,
there must be more to the ideol-
ogy of Conservative Judaism
than that! And if there isn't,
then nothing — certainly not
the denial of rights to women —
will save it."
Who's right? Millie Rosen-
baum of Cong. Beth Achim says
she is, "I'm delighted that our
congregation is the most right
wing, the most traditional in
this area ... I don't feel I need
an aliyah to. be equal to men. I
like being a Jewish housewife, I
like the traditions."
Shaarey Zedek's Weingarden
agrees. "I don't feel women
should, have these (Torah) hon-
ors because they belong to the
men. I've always felt a place of
honor as a Jewish woman. I'm
very comfortable with that."
Conservative Judaism has
made a number of changes that
have reflected the evolution of
society. An important one for
feminists, for example, was re-
phrasing one of the preliminary
morning blessings 'that thanks
God "who hasnot made .me a
woman" to "Blessed art thou, 0
Lord our God, who has created
me in His image." Fishel A.
Perlmutter, in his article "The
Case for Women Rabbis"
(Judaism, A Quarterly Journal,
Winter 1984), says that in ac-
tions such as these "Judaism
laid the groundwork for the full
• equality of Jews regardless of
their gender."
Although a policy of Jewish
egalitarianism seems the logical
extension of feminism in this
modern age, the idea just
doesn't sit well in some 'arenas.
