Rebbe's Library
Sparks Dispute

New York — The fate of the
50,000-volume library of the late
Rabbi Menachem Mendel
Schneersohn, the sixth
Lubavitcher rebbe, will be de-
cided by a Federal District Court
judge in Brooklyn, N.Y. next
month.
Judge Charles P. Sifton will
have to determine whether the
books — many of which are rare
volumes worth tens of thousands
of dollars each — belong to the
rabbi's grandson or to the
Lubavitcher community which
the rebbe led until his death in
1950, the New York Times re-
ported.
The case stems from the sale of
more than 100 of the books by
Barry S. Gourary, the 62-year-old
son of the late rebbe's eldest
daughter. Gourary, a manage-
ment consultant from Montclair,
N.J., removed 400 volumes from
the library last fall. He made
$186,000 from the sale, including

$69,000 for a 15th Century illus-

trated Haggadah.
Gourary insists the books were
the private property of his grand-
father, passed down, via the re-
bbe's widow and two daughters, to

him.

The Lubavitchers, who claim to
have spent $400,000 to retrieve
the books sold by Gourary,
counter that the volumes be-
longed to them — both because
the late rabbi had explicitly said
so and because they had been
purchased largely with charitable
funds raised by the sect.
The Lubavitchers have ob-
tained a restraining order block-
ing Gourary from further sales
until a decision is reached in the
case.

Exports Drop
In Profitability

Tel Aviv (ZINS) — The Israeli
economic weekly Asakim says
that Israeli exports are too expen-
sive and that Israel will have to
lower its prices if it wants to
broaden its export markets.
The weekly reported that Is-
raeli exports dropped in profita-
bility from 15 percent in mid-1984
to 12 percent by the end of 1984.
Sixty percent of Israeli exports
are purchased by European cus-
tomers.
