3 Federations
Vote To Divest

New York (JTA) — Three
Jewish federations — Boston,
New York and Rhode Island —
have decided to divest themselves
of holdings in American com-
panies operating in South Africa
vi,ch are not committed in prin-
ciple and practice to the equality
of non-white workers with their
white employees.
According to a spokesman for
the Jewish Welfare Federation in
Detroit, the divestment issue ap-
parently has never been raised
within the Federation or its in-
vestment committee.
Equal treatment for non-white
employees in South Africa is the
basis of the Sullivan Principles, a
voluntary code of conduct formu-
lated in 1977 by Philadelphia
Minister Leon Sullivan. The
guidelines call for equal pay for
non-whites, desegregation of the
workplace and the improvement
of the quality of life for non-whites
outside it. American companies
which are signatories to the Sulli-
van Principles are evaluated an-
nually for compliance with them,
and for progress toward their go-
als.

The Jewish Advocate of Boston,
in a front-page story by Lawrence

Harmon, reported that the Com-
bined Jewish Philanthropies
(CJP) of Greater Boston — to-
gether with Beth Israel Hospital
and Temple Israel — voted Nov.
26 to divest themselves within a
year of securities in American
companies which are non-
signatories of the Sullivan Prin-
ciples or which received low scores
on the evaluation. The decision
also directed the three institu-
tions to make future investments
in accordance with these
guidelines.

Kahane Appeals
U.S. Decision

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Rabbi Meir
Kahane plans to appeal to the
U.S. State Department against
the revocation of his American
citizenship. He was informed by
the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem
last week that his passport is
being withdrawn because an
American citizen, cannot sit in
the parliament of a foreign coun-
try.
Kahane represents the ex-
tremist Kach party in the Knes-
set. If the State Department re-
jects his appeal he is entitled to
appeal to the U.S. courts.

Named To Post

New York (JTA) — Rabbi Has-
kel Lookstein, spiritual leader of
Cong. Kehilath Jeshurun, has
been named president of the New
York Board of Rabbis.
