when nothing held them back;
they could easily have moved to
the Holy Land. What were they
waiting for?
"What are you waiting for?" the
Israelis ask us. The coming of the
Messiah?" What can we answer?
As for me, I prefer to avoid this
kind of debate. I feel myself driven
against a wall that is in danger of
collapsing: If I agree with them, I
lie; if I defend my position, I hurt
them. I said "my position." Which
one? In a few simple sentences,
here it is: It is given to the Jew of
our days to love both Israel and
the Jews of the Diaspora; he is not
in the least compelled to choose
one camp over the other; just as
the Jew, by definition and by trad-
ition can live in more than one
period, so can he attach himself to
more than one geographical
community. Whoever opposes Is-
rael to the Diaspora or the Dias-
pora to Israel will end by destroy-
ing them both. Neither of these
two collectivities will be able to
replace the other or be substituted
for the other. Despite the love —
unconditional — that I feel for Is-
rael, I am not ready to sacrifice
the Diaspora for her. And if cer-
tain Israelis command such a sac-

I remember: in 1943-44 it be-
came possible for Hungarian Jews
to emigrate to Palestine. "Certifi-
cates" were offered at relatively
reasonable rates. "Let's leave," I
suggested to my father. He re-
jected the idea. "I'm too old to
begin all over again elsewhere,"
he explained to me.
A short while later, all of us had
to uproot ourselves, in order to go
not to begin again but rather to
die elsewhere.
I remember also: summer 1945.
Having arrived in France from
Buchenwald, young deported
Jews answered the questions they
were asked. Where did they want
to go? Some said to the United
States, others to Australia, still
others to Palestine. I was one of
the latter. I no longer know why
but I was refused a visa. Some in
my position went there illegally; I
could not or did not want to do
that; I did not see myself as a hero.
However, in 1947, I presented
myself to the semi-official re-
cruitment office of the Haganah,
ready to leave to fight in Pales-

rifice, they are in the wrong.

I confess that I have not always
had these ideas. There was a time,
as I've said, when my dream was
to live in the far off land of my
ancestors. Israel had for me mes-
sianic, therefore unreal, connota-
tions. Jerusalem fascinated me; I
liked it better than any other city
in the world. Pronouncing its
name, I wept and laughed from
mingled happiness and sadness.
Thanks to prayers and studies, I
oriented myself in Jerusalem bet-
ter than in my small city. In
thought, I strolled through its
lanes, captured its sounds, inter-
preted its twilight silences. At
midnight, I saw myself seated in
front of the Wall, near the mys-
terious beggars who, like me, like
us all, were sitting there to weep
over the destruction of the Temple
two thousand years earlier.
