r THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, December 27, 1985 WE WISH TO THANK Jewish Youth Are Evaluated New York (JTA) — A confer- ence of participants in teen prog- rams and in Jewish Ys and com- munity centers was told that a certain amount of alienation and rebellion is to be expected from children and teenagers, described as members of the "quick-fix gen- eration." The conference on "Today's Youth, Tomorrow's Adults" was sponsored by the Jewish Informa- tion and Referral Service of the Federation of Jewish Philan- thropies. The participants also got the message that professionals within the federation are using patience, as well as new approaches, to break through it. Dr. Alan Siskind, deputy direc- tor of the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services (JBFCS), explaining the "quick-fix genera- tion" definition, said that children expect, as a right, to be happy. He added they feel "a sense of enti- tlement" and are confused and re- sentful when it does not happen. Rabbi Lavey Derby, associate director of the Jewish Education Department at the 92nd Street Y, said "the most significant tool we have is the creation of the Jewish youth programs within the com- munity, a place where teens can find something they do not find at home or at school." Jacqueline Goldstein, federa- tion teen service coordinator, said that federation allocations for teen programs rose from $128,000 in 1980 to $276,000 in the past year. A number of programs now incorporate such features as pub- lic service projects and determi- nation of activities by the teena- gers. The federation set up seed grants for Ys and centers to de- velop more programs with Jewish content. CAR OF THE MONTH Papers Cleared Jerusalem (JTA) — Attorney General Yitzhak Zamir said Sun- day that he would not press charges against two Jewish publi- cations which carried articles de- scribed as "incitement to insur- rection." He said that in reaching his decision he took into account explanations by the authors of the articles and the editors and the fact that they were a first offense. Defense Minister Yitzhak Rabin ordered the West Bank Jewish settlers' weekly Aleph Yud to close after it published an article last month titled "Judaea and Samaria Will Not Fall Again." The writer advocated armed resistance would the gov- ernment decide to give up any part of the West Bank in future peace negotiations. Rabin acted on Zamir's advice. A high school weekly, Hamit- zan,, responded to the Aleph Yud article with a piece of its own cal- ling for "civil war for the sake of peace." The Education Ministry banned distribution of the publi- cation. .0tiftefice STE (263.88* per ma. . -HAPPY DIAMONDS? Ask for RICHARD ROSENBAUM For special savings on all cars.
