Tracking FDR's
`Jewish' Ancestry
Thank you for sending me
Philip Slomovitz' review (Nov.
22) of my book FDR. Of course I
came across his correspondence
with FDR in the Hyde Park
archives, but there was no way
to document any supposed
Jewish ancestry.
In the case of Eleanor, she
often mentioned that she had a
Jewish ancestor, but she was
Franklin's fifth cousin, with so
little common blood that there
could be no objection to their
marriage. So that tracing FDR's
Jewish ancestry is a little like
saying -we are all descended
from Adam. .. .

Rabbi Irving (Yitz) Greenberg
will speak at the Jewish Com-
munity Council's delegate as-
sembly on Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. in
Temple Emanu-El's Patricia
Modell Room.
In his remarks at the assem-
bly, Greenberg will suggest a
model for "Jewish-Jewish"
dialogue as a step toward mend-
ing a rift and protecting the fu-
ture of "clal Yisroel" — the in-
divisible Jewish people.
An ordained Orthodox rabbi,
Greenberg is president of the
National Jewish Center for
Learning and Leadership
(CLAL). CLAL is a pluralist
organization in staff and pro-
grams, which seeks to bridge
the ideological gaps that now
divide Orthodox, Conservative,
Reform, and secular Jews.
Greenberg has served as rabbi
of the Riverdale Jewish Center,
professor and chairman of the
department of Jewish studies of
City College of City University
of New York, and as director of
the President's Commission on
the Holocaust.
Council President Leon S.
Cohan will preside at the as-
sembly where Executive Direc-
tor Alvin L. Kushner will de-
liver a report on recent commit-
tee staff activities.
Coffee will be served at the
close of the assembly by mem-
bers of the Sisterhood of Temple
Emanu-el.
The Delegate Assembly is free
of charge and open to the
Jewish community.
