Health Minister Mordechai Gur ordered the Ministry last Friday to arrange the flight and pay all expenses after the child's family was unable to raise $150,000 needed for the trip and surgery. Gur acted under mounting public' and political pressure from Knesset members when doctors warned that the gravely ill youngster could die any day. Leading Israeli doctors insist the liver transplant can be suc- cessfully performed in Israel but is not, because of budgetary con- straints on the Health Ministry. The child was born with a mal- functioning liver and has spent most of his three years in hospi- tals. Fund-raising efforts by family -and friends produced $25,000, but the public cam- paign picked up momentum when the case was widely pub- licized last Thursday. Several Knesset members said they would personally collect public donations and hand them over to the Health Ministry. Histadrut's sick-fund, Kupat Cholim, said it would cover half the cost of the flight to the U.S. and would contribute $160 per day toward medical treatment. In a letter addressed to Marcela Maxwell of the Com- mission of Human Rights, Raymond Ariel, president of the Yiddish Musical Theater and producer of the show, charged that the magazine and its four editors — William Shawn, Wol- cott Gibbs Jr., Brendan Gill and Edith Oliver — are discriminat- ing against the Yiddish musical which is now playing at the Town Hall Theater, one block east of Broadway in the theater district, because it is omitted from a section that "lists every Broadway shown now playing, as well as some 50 other Off-Off Broadway and Off Broadway shows." Medical Grant Rehovot — The Weizmann In- stitute of Science has been awarded a $211,000 grant over a three-year period from the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation in New York to help support a program entitled "Major Issues and Open Questions in Medicine."
