Nine years ago, Mediterra- nean Kitchen was strictly a spe- cialty store ... with wines, champagnes and class foods ... regulary supplying restaurants with cheeses, spices, oils, vin- egars and other needs. Today, it is still that ... but a restaurant as well ... quite a fine one ... without outlandish prices ... Just four months ago, tables and chairs were added ... and seating presently consists of five tables and six counter seats. Mediterranean Kitchen is in a class all its own ... There are no fancy decor frills ... atmos- phere is like dining in some- body's wine cellar or elaborate kitchen in a homey surrounding. However, every dish setting costs owner George Gize $72 for genuine Mikasa China ... and the glasses are each $17 ... The silverware, which is changed with every course, whether used or not, is Oneida stainless ... The coffee cups are replaced, as they should be, with every refill. This all happens at dinnertime ... Lunch, 10 to 2 is the regular fare of dining ... There is then no eating until 5:30 ... for when reservations are strongly required becasue of the very limited seating : .. It becomes the difference of day and night in much more than time. Chef Chris Le Mieux changes the dinner menu weekly ... as George assists in waiting on ta- bles ... (He hasn't dropped a Mikasa yet) ... No expense has been spared ... There's candlelight with flowers ... cloth napkins and linen tablec- loths. Remember now, this is not an expensive restaurant ... But there are gourmet preparations like ... filet of pickerel breaded with ground pistachios and top- ped by Hollandaise sauce ... bay scallops a la Parisienne, simmered in champagne ... veal marsala aux morels made with milk-fed provimi veal and sauteed in a wine sauce ... broiled spring lamb chops with mint chutney ... boneless breast of chicken Frangelico sauteed with roasted hazelnuts, sliced mushrooms, Frangelico Liqueur and cream ... etc. All dinners at the little Mediterranean Kitchen are served with homemade soup (on- ion or of the day) ... it's won- derful salad (romaine, endive and spinach,) cooked fresh veg- etable and choice of noodles or redskin potatoes. The pastries are all made at Mediterranean Kitchen. Being around restaurants so much, Mike has become a stick- ler on good food and service ... That's why he also does just about everything except Chef Chuck Le Mieux' job ... Mike knows what he wants ... and if it can't be his way, he'll do the work. About the reasonable prices for gourmet dining, George understands costs ... and it's always been his wish to give people a great meal without the high price. Don't forget those five tables and six counter seats facing a window ... 31 in all ... and play it safe by calling ahead for your reservation. Mediterranean Kitchen is one place you won't believe actually exists. HAD BEEN OPENED A MONTH ... but Dr. Alan Dorfman and Dick Masuda held grand opening of their beautiful Jovan restaurant ... next to Jacques in Bingham Office Plaza on Telegraph. Dr. Richard Lutz compares the ambience and decor to that of Annabelle's in London, England ... He's partner with Alan's brother Dr. Mike Dorfman in their chiropractic operation ... Was also birthday celebration for Fran Rassler, there with Rick, and Mike's wife, Shelly Dorfman. About 300 people made the scene and had hors d'oeuvres ga- lore ... Was to be 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. ... but no way ... it lasted long after ... til 1:30 a.m. in fact ... enjoyed also by Alan's wife, Marcia; Dick's wife, Kay; Alan's mother • and father, Chuck and Joyce Dorfman; Dan Hyatt, Jovan general manager; Jim Allemon, general manager for both Jovan and Jacques; Carol Gold of Sacchi, Donna Levine of Bardone's; Rhoda Weiss of Rokiki; Arthur Klein; ,Bob Benson; Jac Le Goff; etc., etc., etc. etc. Thanks ... to Doug Schubot ... for reminding me about it at the Alzheimer's affair. FIFTEEN YEARS AGO, a group began its career at a place called Duffy's Tavern in Union Lake ... The leader was Danny Jordan and his magnificent singer, Marlene Hill, who has been wooed by many biggies in show biz ... She and Danny were wed ... and Marlene was more interested in raising a family. Now, Jan. 8 thru Feb. 11, The Loving Cup will return in a sort of reunion ... to the place they started ... It's now called The New Duffy's ... on Cooley Lake Road ... and owned by Candy Gotts. DELICATESSEN WAITER took his son to the zoo, where the boy watched an attendant toss a slab of raw meat into the cage of a roaring tiger ... "Papa," asked the boy, "why didn't that man serve the meat nicely like you do?" ... The wai- ter whispered to his son, "Confi- dentially, tigers are rotten tip- pers." MYSTERY THE MUNCHER WRITES In an era of heavy metal music, Madonna and other screamers, there's still hope for nostalgia buffs. The 1940s Radio Hourat the Attic Theatre cap- tures the spirit of that decade and it is a visual and musical treat. The setting is the Hotel Astor's Algonquin Room studios of radio station WOV. (
