Dinner Benefits
Nazi's Defense

New York (JTA) — A
Ukrainian-American organiza-
tion held a benefit dinner in a
Buffalo, N.Y. suburb Sunday for
the defense of John Demjanjuk,
a Ukrainian-born war criminal
ordered by the Justice Depart-
ment to be extradited to Israel
to stand trial for his part in the
murder of 900,000 Jews at the
Treblinka death camp during
World War II.
Demjanjuk, a retired auto-
mobile worker from Cleveland,
was stripped of his U.S. citizen-
ship in 1981. On Monday, the
Supreme Court refused an ap-
peal of the deportation order.
According to the World
Jewish Congress, the fund-
raiser, held in Cheektowaga,
N.Y. was announced by the
Newark, N.J.-based "Americans
for Human Rights in Ukraine,"
which cited Denjanjuk's "danger
of extradition to Israel for trial
on war crimes charges."
Meanwhile, in Elizabeth, N.J.,
Dieter Homburg, who has cele-
brated Hitler's birthday with a
party at his tavern every year
for the past ten years, has sold
the bar and returned to his na-
tive Germany.
His departure was apparently
prompted by a sharp decline in
business at Loni's Pub after his
Hitler bash on April 21
triggered an angry protest
demonstration last May 31 by
local Jewish and veterans
organizations. Elizabeth has one
of the largest Jewish popula-
tions in New Jersey.

Sign Treaty,
Israel Urged

Washington (JTA) — The
State Department again urged
Israel to sign the nuclear non-
proliferation treaty.
"We believe that regional sta-
bility in the Middle East will be
enhanced if all states in the
region accepted comprehensive
safeguards and adhered to the
non proliferation treaty," State
Department deputy spokesman
Charles Redman said last week.
"We are concerned by the
existence of unsafeguarded nu-
clear facilities in Israel and
have made this concern known
to the Israeli government," Re-
dman added. "We have re-
peatedly urged Israel to accept
comprehensive safeguards."
However, Redman noted that
"Israel has stated publicly that
it will not be the first nation to
introduce nuclear weapons in
the region."
Although Israel has never
admitted to having nuclear
weapons, Leonard Spector, a
senior associate at the
Washington-based Carnegie
Endowment for International
Peace, said that Israel is be-
lieved to posses 20-25 aircraft
deliverable nuclear weapons.
Redman stressed that the U.S.
has strong controls on the ex-
port of "commodities that have
nuclear application" and is
working "strenously" with other
supplier countries to control
such exports.
