I was distressed by the vehe-
mence of the letter in the Dec. 6
issue of The Jewish News mak-
ing reference -to -the remarks of
a well-known Reform rabbi.
One would have to be quite
naive not to be fully aware of
the substantial differences,
ideological and. others, that
_separate the many streams of
Jewish life. I, myself, have
found reason to question the
stances/ taken by different
Jewish elements on Jewish pub-
lic issues.
Given all this, I am unable to
see what is gained by the use of
__such expressions as "vicious
canard," "pernicious lie," refer-
ences to an "evil racist" and,
most disturbingly, a comparat-
ive reference to Goebbels, a
creature who represented an
evil far worse than Amalek.
Such language in a public de-
-bate will not advance the
Jewish cause.
I fully believe that the intelli-
gence and concern of those in-
volved are great enough to allow
for a far more constructive tone
in the natural and ongoing de-
bates on Jewish issues.

I, too, was deeply offended by
children admonishing a teacher
for his interpretation of a pas-
sage of Torah. I have always
learned that Derech Eretz
Kidma L'Torah — proper re-
spect and civility — takes pre-
cedence over the Torah. I have
further learned that where a
child finds it necessary to take
issue with a parent on a reli-
gious question that according to
Halachah it is done in a manner
that is most subtle and delicate.
And according to Jewish law, a
teacher is accorded even greater
respect than a parent.
Therefore, if I had been the
teacher of the students at the
Beth Jacob School, I would have
chosen to teach the class the
concept of Derech Eretz, and the
deep respect for teachers found
in our tradition.
I would also teach these con-
cepts to the staff at The Jewish
News, for what they have
achieved is to question the
learning of revered and distin-
guished teacher and rabbi in our
community. The treatment of
this wonderful human being is
at the heart of the growing ten-
sions between those advocating
Orthodoxy and everyone else.
That is: in order for there to be
dialogue leading to unity, there
must be mutual respect for the
views and opinions of those with
whom we differ.
By the way, in keeping with
my stated views, I will not ask
my religious school students to
critique the distinguished Or-
thodox rabbis in our community.
