comfortably in her hard backed
wooden kitchen chair, one leg
swollen and propped up on a
footrest. She would lean for-
ward, grab me with her lively
black eyes and begin.
She was my mothers's mother
and loved to tell certain stories
over and over. They usually re-
volved around her two children,
only 13 months apart, a daugh-
ter and son. I savored these im-
ages of her past, embellishing
them in my mind, protecting
and storing them for my chil-
dren.
"Bella was a little fatso! So
chubby. She loved to eat.
Mashed potatoes and spinach.
Meat and luchshin. Bread and
butter. What a job! The spinach
was always so sandy. I made the
luchshin from scratch. I woke up
early, sometimes at four o'clock
what with the diapers, the
bottles, the cooking. Everything
took time, not like today."
We would laugh. I would si-
lently thank her for preceeding
me, for creating the foundation
for my comfortable life.
"Was your mother wild! She
ran around the house, all the
time. Made everything dirty.
Made Joey meshugah, too. The
both of them, vildah chiahs! I
ran after them to stop, to get
them but good. Those two
mazeks always ran into the
bathroom and locked the door."
She was transported back 50
years. Her eyes closed; her
ample body shook with laughter.
On certain visits, I asked her
about her early days in this
country. At 17, she was street-
wise and hungry. She traded her
Hungarian shtetl for a cramped
