BB Changes
Are Proposed

Washington — A joint plan-
ning committee, made up of
leaders of B'nai B'rith Interna-
tional and B'nai B'rith Women,
released its preliminary report
this week of a series of proposals
that would re-define the rela-
tionship of BBI and BBW.
The proposals clearly de-
lineate B'nai B'rith Women's
status as an integral part of the
constitutional structure of Wilai
B'rith International. The com-
mittee is recommending estab-
lishment of a Joint Executive
Council, with equal representa-
tion from B'nai B'rith Interna-
tional and B'nai B'rith Women,
which would periodically review
and coordinate programs and
policy matters of mutual con-
cern.
Reemphasizing that B'nai
B'rith is an organization of men
and women, the committee
recommends that in the United
States B'nai B'rith Women con-
tinue to be the sole membership
vehicle by which women become
members of B'nai B'rith.
Gerald Kraft and Beverly
Davis; presidents of BBI and
BBW respectively, stated "In so
doing, B'nai B'rith Women will
maintain its identity as a pro-
gressive, innovative women's
organization within the B'nai
B'rith family " B'nai B'rith cur-
rently offers three membership
options: lodges (all male); chap-
ters (all female); and units
(male and female).
The committee proposals call
for formation of new units with-
out restriction; women in units
would continue to be members
of B'nai B'rith Women. The
committee is also recommending
that women in units be eligible
for office in either B'nai B'rith
Women or in B'nai B'rith Inter-
national. Under this provision,
women, for the first time, would
be eligible to hold any office in
B'nai B'rith, including the
presidency. Kraft and Davis said
that these recommendations and
conclusions are a realistic and
constructive step in developing
the role of women in B'nai
B'rith.
The committee also proposes
that BBI and BBW initiate joint
programs and projects and that
members be encouraged to par-
ticipate in these joint activities.
