Book Describes
Sharon Politics

Jerusalem (JTA) — Minister
of Commerce and aspiring Likud
leader Ariel Sharon said he be-
lieves that the Israeli system of
government should focus virtu-
ally all authority in the hands
of the prime minister, according
to a new book by journalist Uzi
Benziman.
The biography, Sharon — An
Israeli Caesar, is published by
Adam Books in New York and
by Adam Publishers in Tel
Aviv. It is the first political
biography of Sharon written by
a person not attached to the
ex-general's own close coterie.
Benziman,* a former corre-
spondent for Haaretz in Wash-
ington, is now editor of
Haaretz's weekly magazine. In
the 1970's he was a regular con-
tributor to the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency.
Benziman writes that Sharon
evolved his views on politics and
the constitution while still a ris-
ing army officer when he de-
veloped a contempt for the
democratic parliamentary sys-
tem. In the book, Sharon is cited
as mocking Israeli leaders in
front of his troops duing the
days of the crack 101 commando
unit in the 1950s.
Benziman disclosed, too, that
during a routine tour of the
occupied territories after the
Six-Day War Sharon, then a top
general, described then-Foreign
Minister Abba Eban as an
American spy.
